How to Deal with Ringing in the Ears
by Chris G. Work in Internet Business industryA ringing or buzzing sound in the ear is
something many of us are familiar with, as it can sometimes occur in certain situations, if only for a
few seconds. However, if it turns into a routine daily occurrence and causes
suffering for longer periods of time, then you must come to realize that it is
a symptom of a more critical underlying condition. This can be a symptom of ear
injury, hearing loss, or other auditory conditions. This situation of ringing in the ear
is known as tinnitus in the medical field, and it is an ailment commonly seen
among the people in Ontario; almost one in every five people is affected by it.
Causes
of tinnitus
It is difficult to point out the exact
reason for tinnitus, but some potential causes may include:
●
Hearing loss: The hair cells
in the inner ear are delicate and they can be reduced due to wear and tear as
we age. This change may cause hearing loss and tinnitus can be more noticeable
as it is no more masked by external sound.
●
Infections in the ear: Infections in the middle ear can cause hearing loss, as well as
tinnitus. This is normally temporary, but it is important to treat the
infection immediately to avoid further damage.
●
Exposure to loud noise: Hair cells can be very easily damaged if they are exposed to loud
noise and it can also lead to tinnitus. It mostly occurs when the individual is
exposed to loud noises over a prolonged period of time, but there are also
cases of tinnitus occurring within a shorter period due to the exposure to loud
noises. So, you should use ear protection if your surrounding is too noisy and
harmful for your ears.
●
Excessive earwax buildup: Generally, earwax falls off on its own when more is secreted, so
the ear canal remains clear. However, earwax can build up inside your ears for
many reasons and block the ear canal, which can end up leading to tinnitus.
●
Stress and anxiety: It is
not yet determined whether tinnitus is caused by stress, but if you already
have tinnitus, then it can be more noticeable when you are stressed or anxious.
Types
of tinnitus
When a person is suffering from tinnitus,
the noises he may experience in his ears include ringing, buzzing, clicking,
humming, roaring and hissing. The noise can be very low to high, from a squeal
to a roar. It can occur for one year or both years. Sometimes, tinnitus is
temporary, and sometimes, it can also be permanent. The severity of the
condition can also vary. It can be mild, or the sound can be so loud that your
ability to hear external sound is interrupted.
There are two types of tinnitus:
●
Subjective tinnitus: Only
the person suffering from it can hear the ringing sound. The most common type
of tinnitus, it is caused by problems in the inner, middle or outer ear.
Problems in the auditory nerves or the part of the brain interpreting nerve signals
can also cause it.
●
Objective tinnitus: This
is the tinnitus that the doctor can also hear during an examination apart from
the person suffering from it. It is a rare type of tinnitus and it can be
caused by problems in a blood vessel. Other reasons may include muscle
contractions or a bone condition in the middle ear.
Treatment
of tinnitus
Tinnitus is not considered a clinical
condition itself; it is more like a symptom of an underlying condition. If you
are suffering from tinnitus, then you must visit a hearing clinic so
professionals can help you with tinnitus counseling and tinnitus sound therapy.
Tinnitus
sound therapy
Living with a constant ringing or buzzing
sound in the ears can be exhausting. With tinnitus sound therapy, the severity
of tinnitus can be lessened by reducing the contrast between the external and
internal sound. A variety of sound generators and hearing aids are used by
hearing professionals at the clinic to offer different levels of sound therapy.
In this therapy, the ringing sound is masked by applying sound. This sound
works as a distraction and the focus of the person is altered. As a result,
they develop the ability to pay attention only to the external sounds gradually
and ignore the internal sounds. The methods applied in tinnitus sound therapy
include masking, distraction, habituation, and neuromodulation.
