How to Choose the Most Reliable Industrial Pressure Sensors?

by Alpha Controls Alpha Controls
For applications in the industrial sector, it is important that pressure is accurately measured and controlled. The use of industrial pressure sensors is one of the best ways to provide reliable measurement. Manufacturers and technicians must make comparisons of the necessary features and functionalities when choosing the best possible pressure sensor.

In this guide, we look at the different types of pressure sensors and their relevant application.

What are the Most Common Types of Pressure Sensors?

Depending on the way pressure is measured, the device may consist of different types of sensors.

1. Relative Pressure Sensor

These types of sensors will measure the difference between the ambient pressure and the pressure that is being measured.

Relative pressure sensors will typically measure ambient atmospheric pressure and you will be able to use these devices to measure the difference between atmospheric pressure and process pressure. If you want to determine a measurement without the influence of atmospheric pressure, then you would use a relative pressure sensor.

2. Absolute Pressure Sensor

The absolute pressure sensor will measure the pressure when compared to a pressure reference that is included in the vacuum.

Depending on the nature of the application, it is important to compare the features that are provided with each type of sensor. You should start by determining your reference point. Are you interested in measuring atmospheric pressure or will you want to examine pressure compared to a specific reference point? If you are interested in measuring atmospheric pressure including barometric pressure, then you would use an absolute pressure sensor.

3. Differential Pressure Sensor

The difference in pressure between two different inputs is measured with a differential pressure sensor.

Where two types of pressure inputs need to be measured, the most suitable device is the differential pressure sensor. Simply put, if you want to know what the difference in pressure will be between two points then you would use the differential pressure sensors.

Selecting a Pressure Sensor for Industrial Purposes

To ensure that you achieve the results that you are looking for, it is important to choose sensors that will produce a range that you are interested in measuring. To determine the necessary pressure range always consider environmental conditions and general variations.

The output indicator or signal of the pressure sensor itself should also correlate with your specific measurement or the control loop.

Prior to selecting the necessary device, it is important to consider how the sensor is configurated. The positioning or mounting of the sensors is another consideration that will support the process of measurement.

If you are interested in industrial pressure sensors, then it is important to assess the robustness of the devices that you’ll be using. Only the toughest devices should be a part of robust measurements. The sensors you choose will also depend on the purpose of the application. Are you interested in measuring atmospheric pressure or do you want to examine the differences in pressure between two points? With careful consideration of these factors, you can rely on the sensory devices used for specific measurement purposes.
