How to Choose and Purchase New Windows for Your Home

by Ravi Koli Home improvement
In recent years, latest window technology has advanced greatly. New uPVC windows available in the market are now capable enough to make your home energy-efficient. But if you still want the traditional accent of wooden windows, you can choose them for the interior of your house and select the uPVC windows for the exterior walls of the house.

While there are plenty of window options, you need to keep the following things in mind when selecting a new set of windows for your home.

Choosing Your Window Materials

Windows are available in a variety of materials, such as wood, vinyl, aluminium, fibreglass and Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC). Generally, wooden frames are selected by homeowners for their warm aesthetic appeal. But this material requires a lot of maintenance.

Windows with aluminium or vinyl frames are also used frequently for renovation and new construction projects. The quality of this material ranges from roll-form to extruded aluminium. On the other hand, vinyl-framed windows come in various colour options and hence, can suit any section of your house. Both these materials don’t need much maintenance but they do not appear as elegant as wood. Nonetheless, these are cheaper compared to wood and provide better insulation.

Fibreglass windows are considered better than all these three materials. However, none of them could beat the strength and durability of uPVC windows. UPVC windows provide the best insulation and more energy-efficient compared to all these materials. Moreover, these are cheaper than other material make windows.

Look for Energy Efficient Windows

When shopping for windows, it is better to watch for their energy-efficiency. The R-values indicate the energy-efficiency of your windows. If the R-value is higher, this means the windows offer better insulation.

A window with single-pane has an R-value of only 1 while the double-pane window has higher, up to 4.0, R-value. The triple pane window’s R-value ranges from 5 to 7.

Even U-factor of a window is a rate at which your window can conduct non-solar heat flow. If a window has lower U-factor, it means it is more energy-efficient.

Choose Right Window Style

Window style is personal preference and depends on how you would like your windows to appear within your home. Here are some common types of window styles to consider:

Casement Windows: These are meant to hinge on the sides of a window frame. They open just like doors and are generally taller with a narrow width. They offer an unobstructed outside view, bring in more sunlight and also provide top-to-bottom ventilation.

Sliding Windows: These contemporary windows are in trend now. They also require less maintenance but also offer less ventilation, as only the half portion of the window can open.

Bay Windows: These appear a bit dramatic while making a room look quite larger than it actually is. These windows are considered best for dining rooms, breakfast nooks, etc. to add extra breathing space to the available area.

Buy the Window

Once you have decided which window is perfect for your house, it’s time for the purchase. You need to check wall thickness before making an order. The manufacturers of wood, aluminium, vinyl or uPVC windows in Chennai can customize the frame as per your wall’s construction.
