How To Become A Private Detective In Birmingham
by Dorano V. Professional PR since 2010The job of a private detective is an exciting, yet stressful one. The future of a crime-solving or an insurance company paying money due might be in your hands. It also sounds like a pretty exciting job, if you think about it. When it comes to becoming a private detective Birmingham has a few regulations you need to know about. In most states, private investigators need to be licensed in order to practice and Alabama is no exception. Every private detective has to be licensed and approved by the Alabama Private Investigation Board (APIB). In order to be qualified and approved by the APIB, you need to complete the following steps.
1.Meet minimum requirements
There are minimum requirements to be licensed. First, you need to be 21 years old and never have been declared incompetent by a court or other jurisdiction because of mental defects. Second, never have been committed for a morally questionable reason. And finally, to never have been committed for a felony crime. These requirements are pretty basic, especially since there are no requirements such as educational, however, most hirers will prefer an investigator with credentials.
Also, in order to renew your license every two years, you’ll need to cover a certain amount of hours, which can be covered through courses as well.
2.Pass the examination
Yes, I know exams aren’t fun, but what can we do. The APIB will administer you with an examination designed to measure your competence in the field. The dates for this examination are twice a year, and you can take it in any by registering first.
3.Apply for a license
If you have a successful examination that means you can apply for your license. You will be required to fill an application form. With this application, you should also present some documents which are:
-Proof you passed the exam
-Proof you are a citizen of the United States, the attached document
-Photograph
- 3 classifiable fingerprint cards and a completed ABI Form 46
-Affidavit of your application form
- Application fee that is $125
-License fee that is $300
4.Renewal
To keep on practicing as a private investigator you will need to renew your license every two years. To qualify for renewal, you must also complete a form, the renewal form. Then you have to pay the renewal fee, which is $200 dollars. And you have to have 16 contact hours, of which 2 must belong to ethics. If you are taking educational hours as contact hours, then you should consider the following:
Contact hours | Educational Hours |
1 | 50 minutes |
.05 | 25 minutes |
15 | 1 semester credit hour |
10 | 1 academic quarter credit hour |
Activities that apply for being educational hours are those like, taking a university course on criminal justice (or anything that further helps your development as a detective) and passing it with a C or more. Membership in professional organizations. Approved self-study courses. Among others.
