by Shreya Mehta Presenting from the patient's point of view
It's an age old adage that a person who is once born as a little child will grow up to be an adult and face senility. The senile age is unavoidable in any person’s life span; in the sense that everyone has to go through old age and face the consequences of it, something which nature bestows upon us.

The repercussions of this front of life can get eerily sad and challenge the person mentally and emotionally, but the biggest change that comes is with the body.

The body functions start declining and the body slows down. It starts to become a host of diseases and dysfunctions of different sorts. One such dysfunction that targets old people specially is rheumatoid arthritis. This is a disease that affects the joints of the person and is characterized by heavy swelling and inflammation. There is added pain in the joints and severe disability and pain in movement and basic mobility.

Although this can be prevented and proper caution can be taken, it cannot be cured completely. One can have proper physiotherapy sessions over weeks and proper medications and supplements along with a dedicated diet. Yes, a proper diet is very much important in the life of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Foods recommended for Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Antioxidants are rheumatoid arthritis’ patient’s best friend. One such antioxidant, ‘Quercetin’, is a strong flavonoid and is found in foods such as chia seeds, cranberries, raspberries, tea and onions. These are the essential foods for rheumatoid arthritis and help fight the severe inflammation of the joints and give a little respite.
  • Vitamin D has been scientifically proven to be beneficent for bones and cartilages of the joints and so, Vitamin D should be firmly mixed throughout the diet of such a patient. Sun is the natural source of Vitamin D and so, sunbathing is recommended, however; dairy products and fish cod oil, liver and yolk of the eggs are rich powerhouses of Vitamin D.
  • Zinc and copper are required in moderate quantities to fight off inflammation causing radicals and also aid in the manufacturing of tendons and cartilages that keep helping the movement of joints stable. Zinc and copper are better absorbed with the help of Vitamin B6 and so, foods rich in Vitamin B6 should be eaten along with a regular diet.
  • Omega 3 Fatty acids are a must have in the list of foods for rheumatoid arthritis that should be eaten regularly by such patients. This includes walnuts, soybeans, cod, and fish. The salmon is the most favoured fish by doctors to the patients of rheumatoid arthritis in addition to halibut, anchovies and herring; sometimes.

Diet plan for Rheumatoid Arthritis

It is important, that such patients have a proper rheumatoid arthritis diet plan figured out and follow it strictly, for an easy lifestyle and less severe consequences.

One such rheumatoid arthritis diet plan is panned out below.

Breakfast

Oatmeal is the healthiest breakfast for such patients; besides, it helps keep your cholesterol in check and keep your heart healthy. For a refreshing change, you can add berries or cherries to it, which have a lot of antioxidants in the form of flavonoids in them and help but down inflammation, or you can add nuts like walnuts, that have Omega 3 fatty acids in them.

Snack

It is recommended that you eat every two hours and so, the mid-day snack could be a smoothie, prepared with berries like raspberry, strawberry, blueberry; etc. or a granola bar with berries and nuts.

Lunch

Salmon has a great taste and makes a nice, light salad. Or any fish for that matter. Just pan sear a piece of fish and make a light salad with bell peppers (they help in joint pains) and basic lettuce. For vegetarians, you could fill the peppers and roast them; or make a nice salad out of it.

Snack

Blueberry muffins are easy to bake and hard to resist; and of course, blue berry does wonders for your inflammation.

Dinner

Chicken-coriander-ginger soup is a light and flavour some dinner, which has all the ingredients that are recommended as foods for rheumatoid arthritis. For vegetarians, you could replace the chicken with chickpea (White Chana) and have a nice vegetarian soup.
