How Jamskillet Overcame the Negativity and Stress He Faced Pursuing a Career in Music

by Melissa W. Content Writer
Q1: What were the early years in your career like?

Doing everything on my own is a huge learning curve and it took me several years to develop the style and sound I have today. Growing up in a small town made me stronger because everyone had something to say. Gossip spreads like wildfire here. For many years people have tried to bring me down, tell me to give up, never make music again… but I feel like I have made it through the ringer, converting haters to fans and gaining the respect I sought after. In the end, I am creating an escape for like minded people… So the hate never was enough to get me to stop. If you do something long enough, eventually people will just accept it or atleast recognize the drive to succeed.

Q2: What did you do to break past that and get to the next level in your career?

In early 2012 I decided to take a different approach from just the average rap style and put forth much more emotion and honesty, targeting others who felt lost or as depressed as I did. My first music video “Breathe” had an emo/dark vibe that a lot of kids my age could relate to. Nobody was doing that in Cleveland at that time. Making music that doesn’t just cater to the hip-hop community definitely gave me an edge. With that edge came a lot of haters and in turn stretched far and wide to all the surrounding schools in Ohio, gaining the fans I have today.

Q3: In your career as an artist what have you done to cope with the pressures of tapping into the music industry?

- Early on I knew being a white kid from the suburbs would not get me respect from the start. I had to make sure I stayed true to who I am and not fake being something I’m not.

- I quickly learned that not everyone will agree with you or the path you take in life but as long as I was doing what makes me happy, that’s all I needed to keep moving forward.

- There is always influences or someone in a position we strive to be like. I just looked at some of my heros and told myself “if this is the life I want, I need to just do it and never look back”.

-For a lot of years I really believed fame and fortune would happen overnight… I was obsessed. Once I got that out of my system and accepted the journey for what it is, I was more at peace and knew my day would come when it does. I’m excited to see where the music takes me next.
