How does it feel to have a hot cup of tea, some dosa topped with ghee on a rainy evening? Yummy, right? The feeling of water drooling from your mouth is worth mentioning. Halwa, ras malai, peda- there are endless lists of entities that roll before your eyes when you speak about Ghee. Yet, it is always portrayed as a villain despite its countless benefits and qualities.

Ghee the life savior

Ghee, or ghrita as called in Ayurveda, despite being an important food, plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of an individual. It has always been an inevitable part of human lives since life on earth and is considered auspicious. Endowed with a rich source of Vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids, ghee builds up the good fat in the body. They make up a major part of fat-soluble vitamins such as Vit A, E, and D.

Benefits of Ghee

Samskarasya anuvarthanath!

Potentially known as amrita or nectar of Ayurveda, ghee is the prime entity of the chatursnehas / the compatible fats i.e. ghrita, taila, vasa, majja. Having been mentioned in most classics, ghee has got a unique property of impairing strength to other Sneha without even losing its properties. Those when mixed with other Sneha take up their properties and enhance their quality.

सर्पिर्मज्जा वसा तैलं स्नेहेषु प्रवरं मतम् l

तत्रापि च्चोत्तमं सर्पिः संस्कारस्यानुवर्तनात् ll;

(Ash. Su. 2-3/16)

Ghee can be combined with other Sneha as yamaka, trivrt, or mahasneha i.e. in the proportion of 2,3 or 4 with other fats. Of the different kinds of ghee available in the market, go ghrita or cow ghee is considered the best.

Ghrta has always been the prime choice for psychological ailments. It is advised to take ghrita during pregnancy as these can contribute to the well-being and good intellect of the child. Applying a little ghee over your scalp helps to relieve your stress and calm you down. Don’t forget to have those when you feel low.

Having heard of the importance of the gut in digestion and maintaining equilibrium of the body, ghee plays a key role in its replenishment. Ghee which is a rich source of butyric acid supports the intestinal walls and aids in easy digestion. It is a great appetizer and improves your digestive capacity. Ghee has the special property of enhancing Agni and reducing the pitta dosha.

Have you had a hard time passing your stools? Are you tired of taking medicines? Then before bed, have a teaspoon of ghee with lukewarm water. You can feel the change the next morning. Ghrita relieves your constipation and relaxes the sphincter muscles. They play a major role in relieving your colicky pain. Yes, ghrita aids in supporting immunity by producing T helper cells. The ghee containing butyric acid provides the army with T cells for the same.

"घृतं पित्तानिलहरं रसशुक्रौजसां हितम् ।" - (Ch. Su. 15/13)

Ojas, which are the essence of all dhatus, build up immunity. The antioxidants which the ghee provides are worth mentioning as they are seeking to increase your immunity.
