by Radhika Singh Hi Baby India(Baby Care Store)

For different reasons sometimes mothers are not able to breastfeed their baby all the time, in that case, they move toward the breast pump that allows them to extract breast milk and collect it in a container. There are two types of breast pumps are available in the market, electric and manual. Using a breast pump needs patience and skills. If you learn the trick you will be able to pump out the increased quantity of milk from the breast. Here are some tips that you can follow while using a breast pump.

  •  Be Slow in Pumping: In the first four weeks, work together with your baby to build your milk supply. Pumping can help you in future when you need to be apart from your baby.

  •  If Baby Can’t Breastfeed: In case, your baby is unable to drink milk directly from the breast then you can start double pumping. Learn to use pumps from hospital staff if possible. You can aim to 8-10 session of pumping in one day.

  •  First Time Usage: When you use the breast pump for the first time, perform pumping session for at least 15 minutes. Maybe initially you won’t be able to collect much milk but with time you will be able to stimulate more breast milk.

  •  Stay Hygienic: Always wash your hand before and after breast pumping. Also clean the pump parts that come in contact with your milk or baby’s mouth.

  •  Be Comfortable: Being comfortable is necessary to release hormone oxytocin that stimulates when you are relaxed. Keep everything you need near you so that you don’t feel distracted by anything.

  •  Time Gap: Pumps between breastfeeding should have at least 30-60 minutes gap or it should be done one hour before breastfeeding. This will leave a good amount of milk for your baby at your next feeding.

  •  Milk Volume: Generally, you can pump more milk in the morning, during the evening time the volume decreases. Although, it is hard to say what is the exact volume of milk as every breast produce different amount of milk.

  •  How to Pump: Read the manual to assemble the kit. Then set the speed to the highest level and suction to the lowest level. Learn forward and then start pumping. Once the milk starts coming, decrease the speed to medium level and suction to the comfort level.
