Heat Pumps Make Hot Water Cheaper and Greener

by Elliot Dean Health Guru and Web Specialist
We all love taking a hot shower. Whether it's first thing in the morning to slowly wake us up, in the evening after to help us de-stress after a long day in the office, or just before bed to relax our body, a hot shower is one of the simple pleasures in life!

But with rising electricity costs and all the talk about global warming, it's hard to enjoy the feeling of hot water running all over your body for too long.

Luckily there is a solution. And you can thank technology for it! Heat pumps are a fairly recent invention that use renewable energy to heat water. In fact, they use 2/3 less power than a standard electric water heater.

So how do they work?

The heat pump hot water system works similar to the reverse of a fridge. The heat outside of the unit in the air is transferred directly to the water stored inside the heater. This is done through a heat exchange system. Even in cold conditions the system still creates hot water which can be used throughout the home.

Benefits of heat pumps

  • Generates hot water by extracting free heat energy from the air
  • Works in low temperatures
  • Uses 65% less energy than standard water heaters
  • Drastically reduces the cost of your electricity bill
  • Is environmentally friendly and reduces your carbon footprint

The other great thing about heat pumps is they don't require solar panels. So you don't need to have roof space, or make a big upfront investment to utilise this renewable energy.

To find out more about Heat Pump Hot Water we recommend visiting Australian Hydronic Supplies or Cola Solar.

The systems are also very quiet. The above renewable companies have systems that operate at only 48dBA which is equivalent to the sound level in a quiet library.

Note, if you live in a sharehouse, I would still recommend restricting your showers to 15 minutes, even if you have a heat pump. You might be saving money and reducing your carbon footprint but your roommate may go crazy waiting to use the bathroom!!
