Haute Furniture-An Evolution in the History of Furniture

by Astin Smith Article Writer

The term Haute has been in vogue for quite a period of time in the last few years, and it is slowly but steadily picking up its pace in all spheres of life.  Haute is defined in a number of ways. For some it means elegant, for some it means high street fashion, which again is a synonym for crazy. Truth is Haute is a proud French term, which is means something that is customized to the buyers’ specification.

Haute is personal, Haute is experimental, Haute is everywhere- from fashion to food.So can the furniture industry be far behind?

From the time, man has learned the art of making a house, furniture has been man’s best partner in converting that house to a home. If one can have specifications and reservations regarding the type of food they want to eat or the type of fashion they want to embrace, depending on their individuality then why their furniture décor should be left out? After all apart from serving the basic purposes, it is at best a great form of decorative art.

History:

From the beginning of the nineteenth century, modernism affected this genre of art as well. Earlier it was just gilded or carved wood with simple designs to meet the basic purpose and usage. Now, this gave way to simple futuristic metal designs-sleek and futuristic. The turn of the century saw modern furniture to shed away its excess weight and be more and more experimental by the day. Also, one of the most important aspects of haute furniture is the label it carries, by virtue of its creator. Early furniture is known by the era it belongs in. Also, common characteristic of early furniture are the use of moldings and carvings as well as the use of exquisite floral and animal shapes. This craftsmanship based approach in furniture has been replaced by a designer based approach in haute furniture.

Materials used:

A staggering variety of wood used to be the prime material for making furniture earlier. This changed gradually, and many new materials started being used. Different varieties of steel, each form used for a specific purpose, molded plywood, leather and plastics were mainly used for hautefurniture. This was a shocking deviation from the earlier school of furniture making where durability and ease of usage generally preceded design and innovation.

Pioneers:

In the post second world war period, the modernist motto was embraced by groups of artists, which gradually lead to the promotion of the haute culture and its promotion to different spheres. Some of them are:

·         Vienna Secession

·         Art Deco

·         Bauhaus

·         De Stijl

Influences:

The influences seen in todayshaute furniture is a melting pot of different cultures, aesthetics and sensibilities. But as the term haute refers, it is more on the individuality of the creator of the furniture. And these influences might be anything and everything. From the Edo period of Japanese History to the Art Nouveau movement, to eco furniture or to love of symmetry, haute furniture has captured the imagination of the artists who earn to expand their creativity in different canvases.
