Did you know, the saints of God never followed their birthdays? Even the birth of Jesus Christ is unknown to us. Nowhere in the Bible, is the exact birth date of Jesus Christ mentioned. Even the day we celebrate as the birth of Jesus Christ i.e. 25th December has no facts from Bible supporting it. After reading the pages of Bible, one can have an idea that Jesus Christ wasn’t born anywhere near the winter. Then from where are we following this legacy of celebrating birthdays?

To answer this, we have to dig up the pages of past, the Bible itself. However, not where the story of Jesus Christ is written but somewhere in the life history of Pharaoh of Egypt. God failed to mention the exact birth date of their son, so does this signifies that we should not celebrate our birthdays at all? Well, do not worry you will get to know the answer to it until the end of this article.

The mention of Happy birthdays was only at two places in the Bible and that only in the Old Testament and in the New Testament and both times it is about the life of an Egyptian Pharaoh. In ancient times, the astrologers used to make horoscope of rulers and kings and in it, the date of one’s birth was considered as a very significant omen of the future of that person. It is believed that the date of birth is used to know the position of stars, moon and sun now of their birthday and thereby it can predict their future destiny, their health, their personality, their character and what is the significance of their birth.

The very first mention of the birthday was when pharaohs were crowned. It was considered that at the time of their crown ceremony they were converted into gods. The coronation date of the divine promotion was given more importance than their actual birth into this world. Scholars believe that the earliest mention of the birthday was when Pharaoh was born but Dr. James Hoffmeier, an Egyptologist believes the coronation date is considered as their new birth as a God.

Milestones in the Birthday History:

• The Greeks copied the idea of birthday celebration from Egyptians for rejoicing their gods and goddesses. The Greeks made the moon shaped cake for Artemis and lighted up the candles on the cake to reinvent the glow of the moon and the perceived beauty for radiant effect as a tribute to the lunar goddess.

• Ancient Romans were the first among all to celebrate birthdays for common people but only men’s.

• Christians believed that humans came into this world with original sin. In addition, the fact that origin of birthdays was from pagan gods, they considered birthdays as celebrations evil. However, with time, their mind-set changed and they started celebrating 25th December as Jesus Christ birthday.

• German bakers invented the contemporary Happy birthday cakes.

• During the industrial revolution, cakes were brought to masses.

How Birthdays are celebrated in this 21st century?

Birthday is the significance of the journey that we have started from the day we came into this world. This is a day when we came into existence and stared to learn so many things. But for some people, it is a bane for some it is a boon.

For the people who consider it bane, it is a reminder of the aging of them. For them, their life is ending with every celebration of their birthday. For them, it is the subject of sorrow and remorse.

But for the majority of people including me, who consider it as a boon because this shows that we are growing every second of our life and with every passing year we come across so many different people, things, responsibilities etc. which is indeed important for our personal growth and makes our journey even more exciting and wonderful. With every upcoming birthday, we set up goals and accomplish them.
