Guidelines for writing style of your assignments

There are different writing styles that you need to adapt based upon the type and requirements of an assignment. For example; as assignment may require you to write objectively and write in third person while other assignments may require us to use first person. A reflective writing would require you to use first person while an essay would require you to normally use third person. Following are the guidelines that you must use in your writing style so that you could best grades in your assignments.

1.       Use Concise Language and Avoid Verbosity:  Select those words that express your ideas clearly and concisely to the reader. Avoid repletion of ideas and frame your sentence in such a way that intended meaning is clear in one sentence itself.  For example:

Company strategy should be such that it is able to differentiate its products from competitors. Differentiation could come not only in its products but also how the products are being manufactured or are taken to the customers.

The above sentence is of 37 words. However the same meaning can be conveyed using less than half of the words as below:

Company should adopt a differentiation strategy either differentiating its products or their manufacturing or distribution process.

2.       First person or Third Person: It is of critical importance that you write your assignment in correct person. Normally academic writings are in impersonal style and require use of third person. For example, “Author recommends that retrenchment strategy is implemented at the earliest” or like “Robin (1995) arguments overturn this point and stresses on democratic style of leadership”.

You should check your module guide and instructors for this important aspect of writing style in your assignments.

3.       Writing cautiously and Avoiding Generalisation:  Academic writing is usually cautious and words should, must, always, never are avoided. Absolute certainty and definite cause and effect are not shown rather ‘possible’, ‘may’; ‘likely’ such kinds of words are used.  Good academic writers leave the scope of further enhancement in their arguments rather than making their arguments the final and only point.

4.       Active or Passive Language: Active voice is preferred more than the passive voice. For example, “company launched a new marketing strategy’; ‘Author recommends implementation of work from home program’; ‘Honda has beaten the GM in the SUV market’.

Passive language is preferred when the action is more important than who carried it out for example’ the employee was fired by the company’.

5.       Use Linking words: Linking words are such that they make the assignment a coherent piece of writing where paragraphs naturally flow from one to another, reader is guided and smooth flow of ideas are there.  Words like ‘similarly’, ‘In addition to’, ‘moreover’, ‘Yet’, ‘Although’, ‘In contrast to’ etc. are essential in any good academic piece of writing.

In addition to the above; always write as per the requirements of the assignment, avoid repletion of ideas, back up arguments with citations, arranging the paragraphs in a logical flow moving smoothly from one topic to another.
