We are in an age where almost anything can be done electronically. The case is also true with money transfer. Money may be wired, or sent online, yet the latest check statistics show almost about 18 billion check usage. That is a lot of people still using checks of which most are personal.

What exactly is a personal check?

To put it in the simplest terms ever, a personal check is a piece of paper used to make money deposits. The check written is paid from a personal account, as the name suggests.

It has a special format with information filled out in it – the details such as name, account number, etc of the payee. This information may be written out in hand or through a computer.

Differentiating between checks:

As we stated what a personal check is, it would also imply there are other types of checks too; and yes there are.

These aforementioned other types include: Cashier’s check, Bearer’s check, Traveler’s check, etc.

While we will not be covering the characteristic properties of all these various types of checks mentioned, we will tell you how to recognize a personal check from this lot.

A personal check will usually look like this or have this information written on it:

Ø Generally written by hand and small in size but seldom they could be computerized and large, too.

Ø It is payable only to the details of the individual on the check. For example, on a Bearer’s check, it is marked “cash” without naming a specific individual. So, it can be cashed by anyone.

Ø The deposit is made from an individual’s account as opposed to other types of check which usually pay from the bank, business accounts, etc.

As is true with all material things, you will eventually run out of checks if you are a frequent user. Where to get more checks? One answer is from the bank where you initially opened the account at, or a printer, etc. If there’s one thing we can say about all these methods, it is they won’t offer you discounts.
