Decorations

As Christmas begins in earnest many shops are alive with Christmas decorations from brightly-colored baubles to old-fashioned wreaths and at this dull time of year it is natural to want to decorate our homes with beautiful, colorful items.

However there are a number of tips to make Christmas decorations more green. The first of these is to consider either buying sustainable decorations or even better making your own. Christmas garlands, wreaths and table decorations can easily be made out of sustainable wood and natural wild plants like holly which have been carefully and respectfully sourced.

Cutting down on all the plastic decorations and instead going for more sustainable items will not only help the planet but generally also creates a far more classy, “classic Christmas” look to the home which can be very pleasing to the eye.

As Christmas decorations only come out for a few weeks each year and spend the
rest of their life packed away in a cupboard or in the loft there is also a very good chance that they will get damaged between seasons so one final green Christas tip when it comes to decorations is to pack them away very carefully at the end of the festive season so that you can prolong their lifespan, which not only cuts down your carbon footprint but will also save you quite a bit of money over the coming years.

Support Charities

A useful green Christmas tip is to consider environmental charities and how you can support them over Christmas. You’re likely to be spending money on plenty of other people so why not consider how you can have a positive effect on the environment in this way?

Whether this involves buying charity Christmas cards, or just plain donating some time or money to the charity fo your choice, not only will you be reducing your own carbon footprint but you will also be able to do something that you can feel really positive about.

Christmas Gifts

Many of us feel the need simply to spend money on people and as someone who has worked in the Christmas gift market for a few years you’d be astonished how many people utter the phrase “this will have to do”.

Many of those gifts which aren’t right will end up being thrown away whether you like it or not, which is of course bad for the planet, together with being embarrasing and expensive for you.

One way to go about Christmas gift buying is therefore to take the time and effort to find something that someone *really* wants. Something that they will keep hold of for years – maybe for ever more.

Yes, this approach will potentially take up more of your valuable time but you can not only give someone a gift they will absolutely love but you can do your bit for the environment along the way.

Antiques, out-of-print books, days out, items you’ve made and so on can all tug at the heart strings, cost you less than a standard present and provide a highly memorable Christmas to all those you buy for.
