Good Health Habits to Start in the New Year

by Kristopher Samuels Writer

2019 is coming to a close. This means that people all around the world are already brainstorming ideas for their New Year’s resolutions.

Picking a New Year’s resolution can be quite difficult. If you don’t know what you’d like to do, you can start by making some healthy lifestyle changes. Even if you treat your body like a temple, there is always room for improvement.

Feel free to use the New Year’s resolutions suggested below:

1) Take Better Care of Your Feet

Many people tend to overlook the importance of their feet. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to move around efficiently and complete everyday tasks.

Some examples of footcare resolutions include:

  • Trimming your toenails regularly
  • Dealing with calluses on feet
  • Moisturizing as often as possible

Additionally, you should commit to throwing out any old, ill-fitting shoes. When you wear shoes that don’t fit, you’re more likely to get an ingrown toenail.

If you’ve been putting off getting a pair of orthotic inserts, then you should commit to investing in a pair of Feet First custom orthotics. Orthotic inserts are beneficial for people who suffer from nerve damage caused by diabetes (commonly referred to as peripheral neuropathy). This is because they relieve tension in high-pressure areas and reduce the risk of ulceration.

2) Get More Sleep

How much sleep does the human body need to be productive and efficient? Many healthcare professionals recommend that you get at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night (this number is even higher if you’re a child or teenager).

If you aren’t getting enough sleep, then you should commit to getting more. You can do this by going to bed earlier or sleeping in later, whichever works best with your schedule.

3) Take Better Care of Your Mouth

Many people know that they need to brush their teeth at least twice a day if they want to have a healthy mouth. However, this is just the first step; you also need to floss.

Instead of flossing after you brush your teeth, experts recommend that you do it beforehand. This will minimize the amount of plaque that builds up and slows down the tooth decay process.

Flossing only takes a few minutes of your time, making it a simple and efficient thing to add to your New Year’s resolution list.

4) Cut Down on Alcohol

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a beer or glass of wine with dinner. However, drinking excessively can be extremely harmful to your body. Alcohol can be particularly harmful to these body parts:

  • Stomach
  • Brain
  • Pancreas
  • Liver

If you want to make a change for the better, you should focus on cutting back on your alcohol consumption. Although this may seem like an uphill battle for some people, there are lots of tips and tricks for reducing your alcohol consumption.

Don’t be one of the people who doesn’t follow through with their New Year’s resolution — take the time to choose a thoughtful and beneficial resolution that you can keep, like the ones mentioned above.
