Getting Care Via Medical Lien

by Robert F. Read My Articles, Learn More...
Patients who are suffering from injuries due to an accident that was someone else's fault, an on-the-job injury, or for some other reason which dictates that they will receive a settlement intended to cover their medical bills are often surprised to find out how difficult it is to receive care that is, until they find a doctor that specializes in these types of circumstances and will accept a medical lien as payment.

Why Medical Liens Are So Important

Finding a doctor that takes liens as payments can be vital for accident victims. That’s because they are often out of work due to their accident, and because insurance coverage for accidents can be a minefield to navigate. Even if the patient in question is covered by their own insurance plan, many insurance companies won’t pay out for accident related medical care until the matter is completely settled as to who is at fault. That’s because the patient’s own insurance may not be held responsible for covering the costs of their care, if someone else is at fault for the injuries they’ve sustained or the conditions they’ve developed as a result of their accident. Instead, that person or entity will be held responsible, and they will either have to see that their insurance covers those costs or they will need to cover those costs themselves, out of pocket.

Obviously, this can take months, sometimes even years. In the meantime, the victim desperately needs medical care, not only for their physical health, but for their mental well-being and so that they can return to work. To complicate matters, the vast majority of doctors require up front payment or an assurance from the patient’s insurance company that the patient’s care is covered at that point in time. Medical liens can help solve the issue. These liens represent the costs that the responsible party will cover for the patient’s care.

Finding a Doctor

Not all doctors will accept medical liens as payment, and to make matters worse, patients often need to see a number of different specialists for treatment. Negotiating payment with each specialist is a stressful and frustrating proposition. However, there is a solution. There are doctors who specialize in treating patients who have suffered from accidents, been harmed on the job, or are sick or injured due to circumstances which lead to them requiring payment via lien.

Utilizing the services of these medical professionals is the best route to take when one requires medical care and is waiting on a medical lien. Not only do these doctors take liens as payment, but they know other specialists who do as well. They can often help patients with the necessary paperwork to get their settlements done faster, and can even sometimes recommend good legal representation to their patients. They keep meticulous records, and they know what courts and insurance companies are looking for, so patients don’t have to worry about their settlements being delayed due to shoddy or vague record-keeping practices.
