by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

Honda CR-V is a five-door compact SUV manufactured in 1995 and presented to the markets in 1996. The 1st generation of the CR-Vs was produced in 1996 - 2001 and sold internationally in America in 1997.

First-Generation (1996)

The 1st generation came only in LX trim with a unibody frame structure. The CR-V is roomy with five seats and folding rear seats. It came with dual airbags, power mirrors, power windows, air-conditioning, radio cassette, metallic paint, remote central locking, roof rails, and power steering. The CR-V was available in front-wheel-drive (2WD) and intelligent AWD which was built to get off slippery surfaces and tackle rough tracks making it an ideal car for an off-roading trip.

The CR-V was equipped with a 2.0L B20B engine producing 94KW (126HP) at 5400 rpm and average fuel consumption of 10.2 L/100Km with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. In 1999, the 2.0L B20Z engine was released producing 110KW (147HP) at 6200 rpm and an average consumption of 10L/100KM.

Second-Generation (2001)

The second-generation (2002-2006) Honda CR-V was a wholly revamped car with significant improvements and refinements in power, interior room, and passenger safety. This CR-V gave room to a larger interior for more room for luggage and passengers without jeopardizing the overall car length. It is equipped with the latest safety features – comfortability and some functions were upgraded to higher standards. The CR-V comes with a 2.4L (K24A1) engine producing 119KW (160 HP) at 6500 rpm with i-VTEC, maintaining the previous model’s consumption.

Third-Generation (2008)

The third generation came with a lightweight rear liftgate and has received several external upgrades such as the front grille, the front and rear bumper, and tail lights. The interior is also fitted with new seat fabric, a new audio unit, and some other amenities depending on the trim level (LX, EX, EX-L). The 3rd generation (2007-2011) comes with 2.4L 4-cylinder K-series engines producing 124KW (166 HP) at 5800 rpm, a 2.2L diesel engine producing 103KW (138HP) at 4000 rpm with 5.1L/100KM, and the 2.0L (K20A) producing 165KW (221 HP) at 8000 rpm consuming 9.0L/100KM.

Fourth-Generation (2012)

The fourth generation (2011-2016) was revealed in 2011 as a 2012 model with an extremely different interior from previous generations. The center console and dashboard are now fully joined and fitted with modern LCD screens that display information such as audio settings and fuel economy. Though the overall body size is smaller, the interior space is still unchanged while the exterior turns into a modern and sleek-looking SUV.

The CR-V came with a 2.4L i-VTEC producing 138KW (185 HP) with CVT transmission, larger brake boosters for a sportier feel, revised shock absorbers, anti-roll bars, springs, and lower control arms to improve performance.

Fifth-Generation (2017)

The fifth-generation CR-V was released in 2017 as a completely new car while maintaining its dimensions, utilities, and ease of driving character. It has some small but significant improvements such as a new engine choice and upgraded technological features with the same trim levels of LX, EX, and EX-L. This CR-V has an average consumption of 8.0L/100KM.
