Get the Admission in MIT for Economics Course

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the world’s leading technical university, which is situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

The graduate program in Economics at MIT has begun in the year 1937, whereas in addition to a Ph.D. program has begun from the year 1941. Presently its size has grown with 123 full-time students with 42 faculty members. Its main emphasis is the training of doctoral candidates with advanced study and research for professional careers. The Department of Economics admits full-time graduate study only candidates for the Ph.D. so that to maintain a close and consistent contact amongst the students and faculty.

Graduate Program

To get admission to the graduate program at MIT, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree or any degree equivalent to its value from an accredited college or university. It is not compulsory to hold a graduate degree in Economics. The candidates can take admission to Economics graduate program with having a degree in other subjects. The candidates have to give Graduate Record Examination (GRE) whose original reports are to be submitted and pdf copy has to be uploaded with the application. The decision will be based on the student’s previous academic record with letters of recommendation, candidate’s statement of objective, and the GRE.

Ph.D. in Economics

The doctorate generally requires four years the full-time concentration of the students. The department has no foreign language requirement but in the case of international graduate students, whose primary languages are not K-12 English are required to take the English Evaluation Test. The candidate must:

1-Demonstrate a sound knowledge in core fields of economic theory, statistics, and econometrics through general and course examinations.

2-Further, they have to demonstrate competence in four fields of study; two on each major and minor.

3-The student has to submit and defend a dissertation that represents a substantial contribution to economics.

4-They must be residence for a minimum of two years.

Master’s Degree

At MIT, the students who have already been admitted to the PH.D. The program is granted permission to receive the S.M. in Economics in very special and rare cases. The master’s program involves completion of 6 out of 8 departments of core requirements in theory, a semester of econometrics, and two subjects in a particular field.

International Students

MIT also takes admission to the International graduate students for the Economics course, economic assignment. According to statistics of the class for the year 2017, there were 20,247 freshmen applicants, but only 1,452 admits. Applicants included 15,594 US citizens or permanent residents, and 1,317 were admitted. As many as 4,653 were international applicants, and 135 were admitted.

The process of admission is the same for all the students including International students, but there is an exception for the requirement of language. International students whose first language is not English have to provide proof of their ability to study in English. Additionally, the applicants whose native language is not English have to give a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
