"The true mark of success is found in the journey, not the heights to which one climbs." That's the philosophy author Noel Dias adopted writing his new novel Smooth: Tales of a Non-Convicted Criminal: Book II. The book—which is a continuation of Dias's debut novel published in 2021—follows the exploits of Vincent “Smooth” Lamond, a non-convicted criminal who tries to change his ways by moving to New York City.

What Is The Book About?

Smooth: Tales of a Non-Convicted Criminal: Book II begins with Vincent on the run from an entity known only as the “It” that encourages him to commit immoral and illegal acts. “Hoping to get his life on track, Vincent is bound for New York City, where an education and his estranged son await,” explains the book’s blurb. “Along the way, however, Vincent makes a fateful stop in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and that’s where the ‘It’ strikes again.”

During this stint in Spartanburg, Vincent falls back into old habits—taking drugs, plotting schemes, cracking safes, and getting mixed up on the wrong side of the law. Recognizing that if he wants to better himself he has to do something drastic, Vincent flees the south and seeks sanctuary with his family in Queens. But when he arrives, he quickly realizes that New York isn’t a safe haven. The remainder of the novel follows Vincent as he navigates the Big Apple and attempts to conquer the mysterious “It”.

Why Did The Author Write The Book?

Originally from Ferriday, LA, Dias based a lot of Smooth: Tales of a Non-Convicted Criminal: Book II on his own life. The author was traumatized by a lot of his father’s wrongful and deceitful acts, which led him to believe that he was cursed by those actions. He lived under the spiritual guidance of his mother and was not taught to believe in curses, despite being from Louisiana. He came to the conclusion that something else was wrong. Perhaps a persona of his father’s presence had trickled down, causing him to have this “It” his father possessed. Although he didn’t want it, he had to prove he could surpass his father, all while conquering the root of the problem. It wasn't a curse but rather this “It” inside him. He knew he was leaving home with this evil supernatural power, something he had to conquer to prevent it from affecting another family member in the future.

“No matter what happens in the beginning, it’s the end that counts,” said Dias. “Whatever is done wrong can’t be done long, you move on and every person has the ability to change, and this series deals with that theme.”

Dias, the author of Smooth: Tales of a Non-Convicted Criminal, was very active in different educational aspects of life. He spent five years in the US Armed Forces, and tried his hand at several technical pursuits, including electronics repair, office administration, modeling, and private investigation.
