Gain Knowledge About the Basics of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Save a Life

by Christopher Bayer Founder
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving procedure which keeps the blood and oxygen flow normally when emergency conditions like cardiac arrest or drowning arouse where breathing and heartbeat start deteriorating. This technique has saved many lives and can be performed by any individual with proper training from certified instructors.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a technique that saves lives of people who get sudden shortness of breath, unconsciousness like in the case of cardiac arrests. Every individual needs to learn this technique so that they can save lives until medical help comes up in emergency cases. For that proper training is necessary and hence nowadays online CPR certification courses are easily available that helps you learn the technique efficiently.

Generally, two types of CPR are known:

1.    Hands-only CPR:

This one is easy to perform hence can be performed without expert training. But one still needs to know a few techniques to carry out it perfectly.

•    First of all, check if you can reach the victim easily or not.
•    Secondly, check the response of the person by shaking their shoulder and asking if they are ok! In case of an infant tap at the bottom of their foot and         observe the reaction.
•    Now if the person is responsive not giving a call to 911. But if you see that the victim is a child or is a drowning case give CPR first for 2 minutes.
•    If you find an automated external defibrillator (AED) then check victim’s heart rhythm and if the machine instructs give one electric shock to the victim’s         heart. But the device is not available to startchest compressions without a delay.

For that one should know how to locate hands to give chest compression!

•    For adults, you need to place the heel of one hand in the center of the person’s chest and put the other hand over it by interlocking the fingers.
•    For children (1yr to 8 yr), use only one hand at the center of their chest.
•    For infants, place two fingers at the center of their chest just below the nipple line.
•    Once you have located your hands perfectly, start chest compressions.
•    For adults and children (1yr to 8yr) use your upper body to push straight down on the chest about 2 inches at a rate of 100 compressions per minute.
•    For an infant, push down straight on the chest 1½ inches at a rate of 100 compressions per minute.

In all the above cases allow the chest to react between compressions. Keep continuing the compression cycle until the victim starts breathing or the medical help arrives.

2.    Mouth to Mouth CPR:

•    During initial few minutes of cardiac arrest oxygen is still there in the lungs and bloodstream of the victim, hence chest compressions without a delay become  mandatory.
•    After that, you need to open the airways by putting your palm on the victim’s forehead and tilting head a little back. Then gently lift up their chin with your other hand. For infants, a head tilt is enough.
•    Now you need to give rescue breaths by covering the mouth with a CPR mask and in case of infants cover both mouth and nose. If CPR mask, is unavailable then cover their mouth with yours and give two rescue breaths each lasting for 1 second. Observe if the chest rises with each breath or not!

You can save a life by knowing these simple tricks. For better learning, you can also get CPR Certification Course which is easily available online.
