The world of music is quite fascinating, but classical music will leave you amazed and mesmerized with its magic if you delve deeper into it. Music is produced with the help of many instruments. Percussion instruments are made with bamboo, metal and even animal skin. The study of music longs back to the NatyaShastra, according to which the instruments are divided into four groups.

  1. String instruments known as the Tat Wadya
  2. Blowing instruments known as the  SushirWadya
  3. Instruments made of animal skin known as the AwanadhhaWadya
  4. Hard surface instruments  known as Ghana Wadya

1. Tat Wadya – also known as the string instruments uses strings to create music. Before the discovery of metal strings, people used to use weeds, animal skin, hair etc. to make strings. The frequency of the music created is dependent on its distance from the sound bridge and the length of string. Some of the examples of string instruments are Tanpura, Veena, Sitar, Sarod, Sarangai, Dilruba etc.

2. SushirWadya– Sushir means a hole, thus music frequency is created due to the passing of air from the whole. These are usually made in bamboo, wood or metal. Some of the most used instruments are Shankh, Tutaari, Flute, Shehnai, Sundari etc.

3. AwanadhhaWadya – The word awanadhha means to cover or conceal, thus percussion instruments are a covered box with skin. One of the most ancient instruments is bhoomidundudhi. Other examples of percussion instruments are Tabla, Dholki, Dholak, Mridangam, Khanjira, duff etc.

4. Ghana Wadya–solid instruments means they are not hollow and are in solid state. Usually made of materials like stone, bones, wood, metals, horns etc. since they are solid in nature. They are played with either contact of each other or other things like sticks, hammer etc. Few examples of these are Chipli, Taal, Jai Tarang, Ghanta, Ghungroo, Ghantika etc.
