For PM’s defense a Dancing Hillary Clinton comes to Finnish

by Sara Floyd Hello

“Keep dancing,” former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton shared her support for embattled Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Twitter on Sunday, lending her personal support to, whose taste for partying has drawn global attention.

Along with a quote from former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, a Democrat, and words of encouragement for Marin the former Democratic presidential nominee posted a photo of herself dancing while serving in Colombia as secretary of state.

With a big smile on her face in a crowded club during her 2012 visit to Columbia, while still the secretary of state Clinton’s post included a photo of herself dancing. “Keep dancing, Sana Marin”, it ended with the words.

Marin quickly responded, tweeting back, “Thank you @Hillary Clinton,” and including a heart emoji.

Moreover, a recently leaked video showed a group of friends and celebrities Marin dancing and partying.

With some opponents categorizing her behaviour as unbecoming and supporters arguing that the criticism highlights a double standard of private videos that appeared to show Marin on the floor, singing toward the camera. Further, Marin and five others posing toward a camera and dancing have prompted mixed reactions.

In a boisterous way Marin acknowledged partying `after the release of the videos but said she was angry that the footage was leaked to the media.

Marin told reporters earlier this month that “These videos are private and filmed in a private space. I resent those that became known to the public.”

Critics said for a prime minister it showed inappropriate behaviour, while others now including Clinton have defended the 36-year-old politician’s right to enjoy a private event with friends.

At times, it was important to cut loose, Marin told fellow members of her Social Democratic party.

The world’s youngest prime minister Marin said that “I am human”. Amidst these dark clouds and sometimes I long for joy, light and fun”. Later onwards, she added that she had not missed “a single day of work.”

When a photo emerged of two women lifting their tops during a party at the prime minister’s residence in July she encountered further blowback. Marin again apologized.

Clinton, who at the age of 74, headed the State Department from 2009 to 2013 under president Barack Obama.

For US president in 2016 she was the Democratic candidate. In a stunning upset she lost to real estate magnate Donald Trump, though heavily favored.

Sparked criticism from some who claimed that her behaviour is not appropriate for a world leader and a video of Marin went viral earlier this month with high-profile influencers partying at a house.

Marin said after the video surfaced that “I am human. I, too, need some joy, light, and fun, during these times. I would not like to see and I know you would not like to see and that involves all sorts of photos and videos. It’s private, it’s joyful, and it’s life”.

“I have not missed a single day of work, a single task, and I never will do so”, later added. Again she said that alcohol was consumed but that she was not aware of any drug use at the party.

In response to critics alleging that she may have been using drugs at the party Marin voluntarily took a drug test, a claim the prime minister denied.

Women from all over the world have posted videos on social media of themselves dancing in support of the prime minister in recent days.

Earlier this month another leaked video showed Marin earlier this month, who is married, dancing provocatively with Finnish male singer Olavi Uusivirta in a nightclub at 4 a.m. Marin was also criticized last year after receiving reports for being seen at a nightclub that she had been in close contact with a government colleague who tested positive for COVID-19.
