Food to Eat For Good Eyesight

by Ryan M. Blogger
There is a strong correlation between food and eyesight (general overall health). Various food-related scientific research has shown us over the years that the food we put in our bodies affects our vision. Plenty of foods are known to benefit the body and shield our eyes in the long run. No matter if you wear prescription glasses and want to halt your eyes from further deterioration or simply want to safeguard them from any impending harm, eating the right food is key. In addition to the vitamins you consume, minerals like selenium and zinc are essential in protecting the light sensitive area on retinas, far back in the eye. Fatty acids, ordinarly obtained from fishes, are important for providing sufficient moisture to your eyes.

For prevention or lowering the risk of macular degeneration (an incurable eye disease), one must take foods containing good amounts of vitamin A, C and E along with zinc. Cultivating healthy eating habits (with the right nutrients) and a wholesome active lifestyle early on in life caters to almost all your body needs. But make sure you ask your doctor about the supplements you may consume and if they are right for you. The following food items can be tossed together to make a colorful salad or steamed for a wonderfully healthy side dish, all for your eyes and health:

Leafy, green vegetables

Green vegetables like kale, spinach among others are full of vitamin C, lutein, beta carotene and zeaxanthin which are necessary oxidants that act like natural sunblock for your eyes. They block all harmful UV rays emitted by the sun to protect your eyes.

Bell peppers

Not only do colorful bell peppers reduce risks of prostate cancer, they also help avoid macular degeneration as bell peppers are full of nutrients. Only one bowl of bell peppers is sufficient to give you the entire requirement for the day of vitamins C and A. Filling your tummy quickly, these low calories, fat free bell peppers boast of 3 grams of fiber per bowl.

Carrots

Unlike the myth we have all heard, eating carrots is not going to improve or enhance your vision but they can protect your eyesight from further damage. Full of vitamin A, C and E, carrots are known to diminish the onset and consequences of macular degeneration and cataracts, recent research has shown.

Blueberries

Well, all know blueberries are full of antioxidants and a recent study found out that they have a huge positive implication on our eyesight. They reduce the perils of glaucoma, cataracts, cancer and heart diseases. They are also known to be good for the brain, enhancing brain capacity and improving learning capabilities.

Chia Seeds

These tiny little seeds are packed with more omega 3s than salmon or flax seeds. They are known to contain more antioxidants than blueberries and more calcium than a glass of milk. So sprinkle them over your food or eat with slight preparation.

Nature has provided us with a lot of beneficial foods to protect our vision, we just need to eat more antioxidants, vitamins and omega-3 fats for healthy eyes.
