Fix Those Cracks before They Enlarge

by Kevin Smith Author

If your driveway or patio is made from a concrete slab, sooner or later, it will develop cracks. The constant expansion and contraction of the soil surrounding the concrete will ultimately result in a crack, regardless of how well the ground underneath the concrete was prepared. If you stay on top of the cracks, and repair them as soon as they appear, you can save yourself a lot of money, since you won't have to jackhammer out the old slab and start over again. If you use the right concrete patch, it's a fairly easy process to take care of concrete slab crack repair.

How to Fill in Those Cracks

1.       The first step in the process is to thoroughly clean the slab by performing a pressure wash to remove loose concrete along with the grime and dust, which would interfere with obtaining a solid bond between the old and the new concrete.

2.       Remove any concrete that is crumbling, even if it's still attached to the main slab. You want to attach the new concrete to a surface that is solid. Be sure to clean out any loose bits.

3.       The air temperature should be above fifty degrees for at least 24 hours before you begin the repair.

4.       Make certain you are using the proper cement mix to patch your surface. Ask the dealer for his recommendation if you are not sure which type is right.

5.       Mix the cement patcher to a wet, peanut butter consistency and dampen the concrete on either side of the crack.

6.       Wearing protective gloves, place some of the patcher product into the damaged area. Once the crack is mostly filled in with patcher, use a trowel to add more material and pack it down. Make sure you eliminate any air pockets by slicing through the concrete patch with your trowel and pack the cement firmly.

7.       Once the new patch begins to stiffen, smooth it out with the trowel, feathering the edges with a brush or a broom to blend the repaired area to the existing concrete, eliminating the seams.

8.       Wait for 24 hours before placing any objects on top of the repaired concrete.

9.       Enjoy your brand new looking patio or driveway.

If you follow these steps closely and use the correct product, you'll easily get your driveway or patio area back into shape by performing your own concrete slab crack repair.
