Finding the Best Hat for Your Face Shape

by John Alica Marketer

Whether its summer or winter, hats remain a very common accessory to complement a chic look and protect against the weather. But all hats that look good on a mannequin might not suit every face type. Just like different hair styles are recommended for different face shapes, even hats of different styles and sizes suit different face forms.

This makes finding the right hat a daunting task. If you have been to the store innumerable times and tried every possible hat only to be disappointed about how it looks in the mirror, here are a few tips for choosing a hat according to your face shape.

Hats for Oval Shaped Faces

Considered to be the most proportionate face shape, an oval face has a length nearly one and a half times its width, where the forehead is slightly wider than the chin. If you have an oval shaped face you are among the lucky ones who can pull off any style hat! The ideal choice is to go for larger brims, like a Chinese bamboo conical hat.

Hats for Round Shaped Faces

A round-face is short and wide with prominent cheeks, while the length and width of the face are nearly equal. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a hat with a high crown to add length and small brim for the slimming effect, to balance out the face shape.

Hats for Square Shaped Faces

Square faces are short and angular with a wide, prominent jaw, a square chin and forehead and jaw line of the same width. Go for hats with irregular-shaped brims and asymmetrical silhouettes. Tilt your hat at an angle to balance your angles. Avoid hats with a short brim, no brim, or a square shape.

Hats for Oblong Shaped Faces

Oblong faces are much longer than they are wide; forehead, cheekbones and chin are nearly the same proportion throughout with a narrow width. Choose a hat with a wide brim but flat crown, like a sunhat or fedora, to balance out the proportions. Avoid high crowns and small brims as this will only make the face look even more long and narrow.

Hats for Diamond and Heart Shaped Faces

Heart shaped faces have a wide forehead and cheekbones, while the jaw is narrow and chin pointy. Therefore, it is better to avoid hats that are too wide at the forehead as this will make the the jaw and chin look even narrower. Instead, choose a hat that has a narrow brim and sits closer to the head; a fascinator is your best bet.
