Find Out The Risks of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Surgery

by Prashant Saini IT Professional

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process with the help of which experts fertilize an ovum by sperm outside woman's womb- in-vitro. This is the most common and major treatment for infertility. With this procedure, IVF specialists monitor and stimulate a woman's ovulatory process by providing her certain medicines. They remove ovum or ova (egg) from the woman's ovaries. Then they let the egg be fertilized by sperm in a fluid medium in a laboratory. Eggs are cultured for 2 to 6 days in a growth medium then transferred to the mother's uterus. It is done in order to generate a successful pregnancy.

As In-Vitro Fertilization requires more monitoring compared to other infertility treatments, you should undergo a detailed consultation with IVF specialist before commencing the treatment at an IVF centre. It helps you get thorough understanding about what to expect and its risk factors.

Risks of In Vitro Fertilization Surgery

There are certain health risks you can experience if you do not get the surgery by an experienced surgeon. These risks include:

Multiple Pregnancy

One of the risks due to IVF surgery is multiple pregnancy. It is risky both for the mother and her children. This is because more than one embryo is placed into the womb. Carrying more than one baby at a time increases the risk of premature birth and low birth weight. Given the facts, even a single baby born by IVF surgery is at higher risk for prematurity and low birth weight. The risks related to multiple pregnancy includes -

* Preterm (early) labor

* Maternal hemorrhage

* Cesarean delivery

No doubt, IVF needs a significant physical, emotional, financial, and time commitment. Depression and stress are common among couples who suffer from infertility. A woman who takes fertility medicines can have serve bloating, abdominal pain, headaches, mood swings, and other side effects. After specialists perform the IVF, they prescribe several medicines to patients. Sometimes, it causes side effects.

Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome (OHSS)

Doctors offer drugs to the patient during IVF procedure in order to stimulate the ovaries. Sometimes, it leads to ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS). In OHSS, the ovaries increase and become painful. It causes abdominal discomfort. There are situation that leads to shortness of breath, fluid retention in the abdominal cavity and formation of blood clots. Hence, it is good to stay in a hospital under the observation of a doctor.

Birth Defects

There is slightly increased risk of birth defects with babies who are conceived by IVF. Birth defects' risk to the children who are conceived naturally is 2-3%. On the other hand, the risk in children conceived by IVF is estimated to be 2.6-3.9%. Apart from that, there may also be at the risk of sex chromosome abnormalities, hypospadias (a congenital condition in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside of the penis) imprinting disorders when intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is performed along with In Vitro Fertilization.

Due to plenty of risk factors, it is highly suggested to consult a popular and reliable IVF center where highly-experienced and certified specialist treat the patients.
