Find the Right Policy By Comparing RV Insurance Companies in California

by Kevin Smith Author

Would you buy a house and leave it uninsured? Would you drive a car up and down the highways without insurance? If you're like most people, you probably said no to both of these questions. Then why would you consider having an RV without the right kind of insurance? It doesn't make any sense. A RV is basically a house you drive!

In fact, the state of California does require all motorhomes to be insured. If you can drive it, it needs insurance! This does not include campers, trailers, and fifth wheels that are towed behind a vehicle. All RV owners should consider a policy that provides them with ample coverage in the event of an accident.

Standard coverages for both recreational and full time RV insurance includes:

Comprehensive & collision

Bodily injury & property damage liability (BI/PD)

Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM)

Medical payments

If you a little additional coverages, these are available as well:

Full coverage for belongings & personal items

RV roadside assistance

Disappearing deductible

Vacation liability

Your RV is a big investment. If you want as much coverage for your investment as possible, that is certainly understandable. You can ask RV insurance companies in California about comprehensive and collision policies and include:

Unlimited small accident forgiveness

Large accident forgiveness

Emergency Expense

Free fire department service charges

Trailer coverage for your RV

Mexico physical damage

Pet injury coverage

The minimum coverage you have to carry on your RVis the same as the coverage required for other vehicles in California. This means:

$10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which provides coverage for medical expenses for you and any of your passengers.

$10,000 Property Damage Liability, which provides coverage for damage caused to the other vehicle or property involved in the collision.

In addition, be sure that your insurance policy is specific to how often you use it. If you are a full-time RV driver, you’ll want to make sure coverages like PIP and Comprehensive are active year-round. If you store your RV for part of the year and only drive it up north for the summer or to Florida for the winter, you’ll want a policy that allows you to suspend coverages that are only needed when using the RV. You'll save money this way.

Be sure you don't just get cheap RV insurance quotes in California and call it a day. California is the state with one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers. If the other driver doesn’t have insurance, your own may not be enough to cover the cost of repairs to your RV. If you're in an accident with one of these irresponsible drivers and try to make a claim, you may find out why your cheap policy is so inexpensive. It is because it doesn't cover anything! Don't do this to yourself! When you take a little time and do some research, you'll be able to find a great policy that covers everything you need for a price you can afford.
