Film Maker In Kolkata Making Commercial Cinema

by Jemes Leips Office Interiors

Communication together with its twin information is perhaps one of the most hyped words in the contemporary culture. It encompasses a multitude of experiences, actions and events as well as a whole variety of happenings, meanings and technologies too. Thus any conference or meeting or even the cinema which involves two or more people is classified within the terminology of communication. Newspapers, radio and television are the forms of communication media, mobile phones, pagers, fax and emails are technologies and film directors, camera crew, journalists and advertisers are communication professionals. The cinema has been regarded as a robust phenomenon of the mass culture. But before discussing this, it should be analyzed whether mass communication has led any changes in the people diversified culture? Has the Bengali or the Hindi cinema which is in every sense the most popular and most widespread form of mass entertainment in recent times in India made any dent in old cultural values? Or whether the television which in Indian context is nothing more than an extension of cinema in any way affected the culture of urban life significantly? The answer is yes it has and not only the cities but the rural areas too.

Explaining this point comprehensively, the renowned Film maker in Kolkata says that the Indian movies might introduce new fashions for both males as well as the females in the area of clothing, hairstyles, manner of speech, way of greeting one another and in methods of socializing. Some individuals are so much influenced by the films that they start enacting a scene of the movie. The mainstream Hindi and regional language cinema, the glossy film magazines and the movie advertising posters offer examples of mass culture especially in the cities. So the culture propagated by the mass media is not necessarily the popular culture of the masses. More often than not, as in the Bengali cinema, it is the synthetic East Indian or Kolkata culture paying lip service occasionally to the values of popular culture. Examples of mass culture are the films for the big and the small screens, what is sometimes derisively termed as the commercial cinema. The Indian cinema has the qualities of the mass culture product but some film critics still doubt if it has given rise to mass culture amongst the general population.

That the cinema is most popular form of entertaining the audiences is evident from the fact that nearly eight hundred films are produced every year. To add more, they are being screened in over more than twelve thousand five hundred theatres including the multiplexes. They are shown on the television and precisely there are channels meant for only movies. Their number is increasing with the passage of time and a tough competition prevails between them regarding the Television Rating Points or TRPs. The competition is also regarding the television premiere of recently released films. The Bengali film production house is always trying to make meaningful movies and continue the tradition of the great directors like Satyajit Ray, Rwitwik Ghatak and other such people. So enjoy the movie and get your money’s value worth.
