Fertility and Conception

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

A couple, who is trying to have a baby must know the basics of the entire pregnancy. This process starts with the fertility and its aspects and conception time of fertilization of the egg.

Fertility is the natural ability to live beings to produce an organism of a similar type. For conceiving naturally, both partners must be fertile. If a woman cannot conceive even after having regular unprotected sex for almost a year, either of the partners might be suffering from infertility.

Conception is the process where sperm enters the vagina, travels to the uterus, reaches the fallopian tube, and fertilizes the egg present there.

Fertility and Its Measures in Males and Females

A fertile person produces some hormones that trigger the production of sperm in males and matured eggs in females.

In males, fertility is measured by the quality and quantity of sperms in semen. During a sexual drive, males ejaculate semen in which sperms are present. The capacity of sperm to fertilize an egg depends on the number of sperms in semen, sperm movement in semen, and sperm shape and size. The fertility of males slowly decreases after the age of 45.

In females, fertility is observed by ovulation. Ovulation is a stage in the menstrual cycle in which eggs are produced from the female’s ovary. Ovulation occurs after 14 days of the menstrual cycle start and is considered the most fertile days of the month for women. A woman’s fertility gradually decreases after the age of 32-35 and stops with menopause around the age of 45-50. Conception Process

If a couple is trying to conceive naturally, both must be fertile and must have unprotected intercourse during the fertile days of the woman’s menstruation cycle, preferably during ovulation. During a sex drive, a lot of sperms enter the female vagina but only a few of them can reach the the fallopian tube where fertilization occurs.

Conception is a process, where a sperm swims through the cervical mucus in the vagina, travels to the uterus, and is pushed to the fallopian tube. Fertilization of the egg happens in the fallopian tube. As soon as sperms reach the uterus, the immune system activates and white blood cells fight against sperms and try to kill them. Only a few of the sperms reach the fallopian tube. In the fallopian, the egg is already present that attracts the sperm towards itself. Sperms try to penetrate through the outer membrane of the egg and reach the nucleus and share the genetic information. The fertile egg is now called the zygote. After one week or two, the fertilized egg is pushed back and implanted naturally into the uterus for further growth.

If either of the partners is suffering from fertility problems, this whole process of fertilization can also be performed outside the body with the help of medical science procedures such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).
