work was conducted by the group of fossil hunters associated with the famous
Black Hills Institute of Geological Research of Hill City, S.D. The team spent
the summer of 1990 in search of dinosaur fossils. Suddenly, Sue Hendrickson
stumbled across the fossilized bones stuck out from the rock face.
The fossil of Sue T Rex is the most
complete and best-preserved skeleton, and it is aged approximately 67 million
years. This skeleton is the largest among other discovered T Rex skeletons. The
weight of the Rex skeleton is 9 tons, and its length is 42 ft, which is 12.8
meters. The skeleton was named, after Sue Hendrickson. He was one of the famous
marine archaeologists and palaeontologists from the USA.

Williams is the owner of the land where this skeleton, was discovered. Williams
received a monetary award of $5000 after the discovery. His land was held in
trust by the Government of the United States to unearth the skeleton.
The skeleton
of Sue T Rex was
discovered by Sue Hendrickson, while the bones got recognized by Peter Larson.
Peter was the President of the Black Hills Institute. The huge skeleton was
taken out from the cliff by a large team of workers. It took 17 days to take
the skeleton out from the rock face. Officially the skeleton is named FMNH PR
2018, but it is popular with the name Sue.
It gained
popularity as it was the most complete and the largest, T-rex skeleton. But there was a nonstop
custody battle that continues for almost a decade. It ended with the above-said
amount payment, to the landlord for the right to pull out the skeleton from the
land. The controversy started when Williams claimed that the fee was paid to
him for search and cleaning the fossil but not for the right to possession. The
entire Sioux Tribe to which Williams belonged to was involved in the
case.
In the year
1992, the Federal agents seized the bones of the skeleton claiming that
Government did not give any permission to remove the fossil. In response to
this, the District Court in the U.S appealed and said that the fossil should be
the property of the trust. The trust which possesses the right of the property
of Williams. In the year 1994, the U.S Supreme Court validated the right. As
per this verdict, Williams and the Bureau of Indian Affairs became the owner of
the fossil of Sue T Rex.
