Facts About Bacteria and Why You Need to Change Your Hygiene Habits

by Kristian Wilkinson Commercial cleaning services

Bacteria are tiny microscopic organisms that can survive in some of the world's most diverse and extreme living conditions. While most forms of bacteria serve a meaningful purpose, some are harmful and can cause diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis and MRSA.

Types of Bacteria

While it would be almost impossible to describe each type of living bacteria in existence, there are three basic shapes/types worth familiarising yourself with. This includes:

·       Spherical - Shaped like a ball, this type of bacteria is referred to as a coccus. It's a form of bacteria that can cause multiple health issues such as peritonitis, blood poisoning and pneumonia.

·       Rod-Shaped - Known as bacilli, this rod-shaped bacterium can be both helpful and harmful. This type of bacteria causes anthrax, a deadly disease with symptoms such as chest pain, fever, abdominal pains and skin ulcers.

·       Spiral - Spiral bacteria has a unique shape and can lead to Lyme disease. It's also very flexible and can change its form quickly, which is one of the main reasons why Lyme disease is so difficult to treat.

Bacteria Reproduction

Bacteria can reproduce very fast, spreading disease in a short space of time. The reproduction process is called binary fission and involves the "parent" cell creating a copy of its DNA. It grows larger in size and eventually splits into two identical cells, multiplying quickly and effectively. The best way to keep harmful bacteria at bay is to change your hygiene habits and maintain a safe and clean environment.

Fighting against bacteria at home

Germs are everywhere and whilst a basic hygiene routine can help protect you from harmful bacteria, it might not be enough. Bacteria is present in an endless range of everyday items including pet bowls, smartphones, TV remotes, laptops and bedding.

Bed sheets, pillows and mattresses are all breeding grounds for nasty germs and harmful bacteria. Washing your bed sheets at least once a week will help fight against germs that can cause you to wake up with a runny nose, irritated eyes or aggravated asthma symptoms.

Floors and carpets

A homeowner's carpet can accumulate up to 200,000 bacterial organisms per square inch. To put it in perspective, that's 4,000 times more than the average toilet seat. Studies have found that dangerous pathogens such as E. Coli, Salmonella and STAPH can be found in carpets and even on hard wooden floors. This type of bacteria can cause respiratory illness, urinary tract infections, skin irritation and many other health conditions. They can be spread on the carpet through things like dirty hands, skin cells and pets etc. They can also be transferred on the carpet from outside.

Unfortunately, running a vacuum over the area isn't going to cut it. For larger establishments such as theatres, cinemas and offices, a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service such as Future Cleaning Services is usually required. This will help to not only eliminate harmful bacteria from breeding between the carpet fibres but to help prolong the life of the carpet.
