ESD Protection Equipment – What Is It And The Typical Scenarios Where An ESD Event Happens?

by Beth S. Freelance Writer

Electrostatic discharge or simply known as ESD is defined as the sudden electricity flow between two electrically charged objects, which is caused by contact. In general sense, two electrically charged objects coming into contact with each other causes an electric short or what others would say as dielectric breakdown. An object can build up electrical charges called static electricity which is considered as harmless as it is at rest. But if put nearer or comes into contact with another charged object, then it creates an ESD event which is often seen as a visible spark.

In the past, people encountered numerous ESD events without knowing what it is and why it is happening. They don’t even know how to prevent such things from happening to begin with. But as time progresses and our technology developed, studies about ESD events are conducted and it ultimately led to the formulation of ESD protection measures. This is one of the great benefits of the conducted studies as it paved the way for people to collect information necessary to produce ESD protection equipment.

Knowing the particular situations wherein an ESD event can happen is essential as it could help prevent it. Of course, having the necessary ESD protection and/or cleanroom supplies will be of great assistance as well.

Did you know that a person simply walking to enjoy the sun or on his way to work can generate up to thousands of volts in his body? Can you just imagine what will happen if he unknowingly comes into contact with another differently-charged object? It will be extremely dangerous as it could cause an electrostatic discharge event. And depending on the level of charge and other factors, it can have an impact to the person. So, what will you do to ensure this doesn’t happen? With the use of ESD protection equipment and personal grounding, you can prevent such event from happening.

One other situation where an ESD event could happen is when repairing a PCB. A PCB or printed circuit board is described as the “board base” used for physically wiring and supporting the socketed components in different electronics. An individual who is electrically charged coming into contact with an electronically-charged PCB is not a good scenario. So, before repairing any PCB, it is necessary to get in touch with clean room suppliers to provide you with the necessary equipment or packaging to handle it.

These are not the only situations wherein a possible ESD event could happen. But knowing that these are the two main scenarios can help in preventing an event from happening in the first place. In case, it really can’t be helped and you have to hold and repair a PCB, it is necessary that the proper equipment is at hand. A company delivering ESD protection equipment can offer shielding bags, aluminium moisture barrier and foam bag, and many more. These bags are helpful in carrying typical items that pick up static electricity. This could prevent an ESD event from happening or have less harmful impact to people.
