Engine Coolant Guide

by Trade Price automotive

Your vehicle is made up of thousands of parts. When there are so many parts in a machine, they are bound to come in contact with each and other and cause friction, and some also generate heat, when they are in use; like the engine of your car. We use fluids to remove all of these unwanted energies and forces to ensure the proper functioning of the elements of the vehicle. One of these fluids is the engine coolant.

The engine is responsible for the burning the fuel that will, in turn, deliver power to the pistons. The combustion of the fuel causes enormous heat in the engine, which is dangerous for the components under the hood, and in the worst case can result in the totalling of the engine. To avoid this, we use engine coolants.

What is the Composition of the Engine Coolant?

The engine fluid is made up of a 50:50 combination of water and the antifreeze substance. This antifreeze substance has a higher boiling temperature and also a lower freezing temperature than water. It is maintained so because when the temperature is on it’s extreme, water will not be able to perform adequately. Hence, it is mixed with an antifreeze substance.

How Does It Work?

The coolant is filled in the radiator that circulates through the vital parts of your engine. This coolant absorbs the heat by the induction phenomenon and then dissipates it, after which it gets ready for the next round.

How Can You Check Your Coolants for Their Levels and Top It Up?

To ensure that you are doing it right, we provide you with the following steps:

1. Your vehicle should not be at an elevation and should be parked parallel to the ground.

2. Don't try to measure it just after taking a ride in your vehicle. The fluid may be pressurised and can evaporate quickly, burning your hands and body.

3. After taking these precautions, you are now good to open the hood of the vehicle.

4. Take the help of your user's manual that is provided with the car to know the exact location of the reservoir.

5. If the level of your coolant has fallen below the minimum level, more coolant needs to be added. For this, you should know which type of coolant will help your car the best. You can find the information in your driver's manual.

6. Now remove the reservoir's cap and fill it in with the coolant to the optimum level.

7. Place the cap back on, and you are good to go.

It is recommended that you change your coolant with time, as this fluid gets dirty and corrupted with impurities. This will inhibit the working of the coolant.
