by Esha Jose bookmarking

With the temperature slowly rising, all of us are beginning to feel the heat. Back in the day, we would rely on icecreams, juices, and popsicles to give ourselves some respite from the rising temperature. But these days, all you need to do is click on a button to switch on the air conditioner. Air conditioner is one of the “coolest” inventions in recent times since it provides us with the necessary relief. And better yet, you can choose the size of it depending on your requirement. For example, you can choose a 1 ton AC for a big room, whereas a half ton AC is enough for a smaller room.

As you know, excessive use of an air conditioner can cause an exponential increase in your electricity bill. And that is something none of us want to experience. While the increasing bill is a common side-effect of using AC all the time, is there anything you can do to ensure energy-saving? Well, there certainly are a few ways to make your window or split AC cost-effective. Mentioned below are a few of those ways.

  • Set a default temperature
A lot of us make the mistake of assuming that the lower the temperature, the more comfortable we will be in a room. This is why you see a lot of ACs set at 18 degrees all the time. This is completely unnecessary. The outdoor temperature in the summers is often around 33-34 degrees Celcius. Setting your AC at a default temperature of 24 should be just fine.

  • Ensure proper installation
If you want your AC to function at its optimum capacity, you need to make sure that the installation is done right. Make sure that you ask professionals to install your AC on purchase.

  • Avoid direct sunlight to the AC unit
The outdoor unit of your AC should not be installed in a direction where it is exposed to direct sunlight for a long time. It causes the AC to work harder to maintain indoor temperature, leading to raises electricity bills.

  • Avoid non-stop usage
This is a given in Indian households. But if you are an exception and use your AC 24/7, don’t. It will put excessive load on your AC unit. Once you think the room is cool enough, switch the AC off until becomes a bit hot again.

  • Ensure proper maintenance
When you purchase an AC, make sure you also enquire about after-sales services. It is important to clean the filters from time to time to ensure the smooth functioning of the unit. Proper maintenance will help reduce your utility bills in the long run.

  • Opt for a higher star-rated AC
The star rating on the AC is a depiction of how energy-efficient the AC is. While it is true that the split or window AC price of a higher rated unit will be more than the lower variant, it will be beneficial in the longer run.
