by Satya Prakash SEO, SMO, Internet Marketing Expert
Embroidered sarees are immensely popular among Indian women as they display artistry and intricacy in their styles and designs. Artisans have settled in various parts of India thus the embroidery has a rich and diverse regional bias.

Embroidered sarees are mainly made in the western region and display a rich embroidery (bharat) tradition. These intricate and enticing embroideries are created by ethnic groups like the Rabari and Sodha Rajputs. These artisans are accomplished in making sarees with metallic thread embroidery and these sarees are very popular in the western part of India. Most of the embroidery work is created in Northern India as well.

Originally these embroideries were associated with the rich and aristocratic muslim communities but they are popularly worn by Rajputs, Lohanas, Marwaris and others. Urban women sport these sarees as party and wedding wear. The creativity of the artisans flourished under the patronage of the Rajputs. The tradition of embroidery was popular in India before the advent of the Mughuls.

The embroidered sarees are distinguished on the basis of threads used for embroidery work. The Indian artisan uses three types of metallic embroidery. Two of these use gold wrapped threads called ‘kalabattun” which were used by artisans of olden times or Zari. The Muka style made with thick zari work on silk is worked on heavier silks and satins. Kamdani is another style of embroidery which has the embroidery threads directly worked into the fabric with both the zari and the ground cloth. The intricate embroidery work on georgette and chiffon has gained popularity in India and abroad.

The zardozi embroidery has been made prominent by eminent designers such as Ritu Kumar, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Satya Paul etc. Patna has a strong commercial zardozi embroidery tradition for many years serving the local aristocrats and wealthy patrons of the 19th century.

Eastern India also has a rich tradition in embroidery. During the 16th and 17th centuries the Portuguese imported quilts from eastern India. In the 18th and nineteenth centuries cotton and silk appliqués were created in Bihar. Different kinds of cotton on muslin and silk on muslin and zardozi embroideries flourished in the region. Kantha embroidery is a product of the Bengal Bihar region. Lively motifs and folk art designs are rendered through this style of embroidery.

Chikankari is a legacy of the aristocrats in India. Originally from Lucknow, it is now popular all over UP. Embroidered sarees have a profitable market. Eminent designers such as Ritu Kumar and Satya Paul embellish their sarees with carefully chosen embroidery. Embroidered sarees are ideal for party wear and reflect the ingenuity and creativity of the craftsmen who inspire them.
