Early Math Skills Help Improve the Learning Outcomes in Kids

by Amit Gupta Education Blogger

Mathematics is an indissociable aspect of life. It starts from the very beginning when the little ones start taking their first tiny steps and parents happily use numerals (one, two, three, four, etc.) to count each of those precious footsteps towards them. It thereby goes on to remain intertwined in our day-to-day life in one form or the other.

Is there really any need then to feel afraid of the subject? Actually no! But still, a lot of children feel scared of math and try escaping the same as much as possible. So, what is the way out? Isn’t there any solution to ease off the unnecessary pressure of their young minds and make them fall in love with numbers?

Yes, of course, there is a solution, and that lies in imparting the kids the necessary math skills at an early age. Studies have revealed that providing the kids with early math skills not only helps them get rid of any kind of math anxiety but improves their learning outcomes. And on that note, we, at Gurukul The School, one of the top five schools in Ghaziabad, would like to share with you all today some of the most effective ways to build early math skills in your little ones.

  • Help them recognize and connect with mathematics in everyday life

Math is everywhere. It is right there in the simplest of things we deal with every day. Hence, try to help your kids recognize math in whatever they do. While using the staircases in your home, ask them to count the stairs they’re on. Give them the task to count how many windows you have in your house or ask them how many clothes they’re wearing. This will help them realize the importance of the subject and also help to relieve their fear of math.

  • Encourage self-learning

It is possible to enhance your child’s basic math skills in the middle of an outdoor walk too. Take your kids to the playground and ask questions like how many dogs are around or the number of birds flying in the sky. The best way to let them know is to let them discover. Self-learning will allow your kid to grow into a more responsible and dedicated human being in the future.

  • Introduce them to the world of shapes

It’s greatly needed to make your child familiar with different kinds of 2D and 3D shapes. For instance, you can use football to give them the knowledge of sphere shape, pick a block and point it out as a cube; a water bottle could be an example of a cylinder, etc. For the 2D shapes, draw different captivating and colorful pictures in their notebooks. This is the fundamental geometry you can teach your children through simple everyday things.

  • Take help of games and puzzles

Choose the toys like Counting bears, Abacus, Magnetic frames, Pattern blocks, Math link cubes, etc., that work wonders in enabling kids to understand math. Designed with simplicity, these kinds of games and puzzles help to easily catch the attention of young kids and deliver them with a basic understanding of the math concepts in a fun manner. It has been seen that including simple mathematical problems in your child’s daily life help to enhance their math skills and improve their learning outcomes. It helps them easily comprehend the concept of identification, comparison, coordination, and recognition. All these lessons that they learn at an early age help bestow them with strong math skills that will come to their aid all along in life ahead.
