DX History

by Stacy Colins Writer

For my research, I have chosen the movie The Cotton Club, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. This movie was first released in 1984, and it depicts the events that occurred between the 1920s and 1930s in New York. I would like to examine this movie in detail because of its complex nature. The movie under discussion describes Harlem jazz, which became part of American culture, and the times of gangsters in the USA. In his work, Coppola, with confidence and passion, shows talented black musicians on the stage of a Harlem nightclub. What is important to the research is that the audience that listened to the performers consisted mainly of whites. The movie masterfully combines the elements of the American criminal world of those days, love stories, racial division, and Harlem music. In this respect, I believe that The Cotton Club is a polyhedral absorbing movie that requires further investigation in order to determine how the movie presents the aspects of America of the time period it illustrates and of the time in which it was made.

Although the movie highlights different themes, all of them are interrelated and connected to the American history. I would like to investigate the background of Harlem culture, specifically the music black artists played at that time. Moreover, the research will focus on the connection between the New York criminal world of gangsters and Harlem music. In particular, the work will analyze the power and impact criminals had on the jazz nightclub depicted in the film. At the same time, the paper will shed light on the issue of racism in America at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition, while racial division remains a topical issue, it is crucial to research its depiction in this movie more meticulously. To conduct my examination of The Cotton Club, I will need to find more sources in order to strengthen the argument. In this regard, I will search for books and the articles in scholarly journals and magazines that cover the period illustrated in the movie as well as the reviews that provide a critical evaluation of the film.
