by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

The Toyota Harrier was first produced in December 1997 and is currently in its fourth generation. The fourth and current generation Toyota Harrier XU80 series was released on 13 April 2020 and began selling on 17 June 2020. The XU80 series brings a new level of excellence in terms of design, power, fuel efficiency, reliability, and comfort, which was established by its previous generations.

5 Pros

Exquisite Design

Toyota offers a new platform, the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) which made the car bigger, wider, and longer than the previous model. The futuristic design gives the vehicle more appeal and makes it more pleasing to the eye with its blanked-off upper grille and slim LED headlights with LED daytime running lights.

Comfortable Cabin Space

The new Toyota Harrier is an ideal family car with a comfortable and spacious cabin that can accommodate five passengers. It has a black or darker interior, which makes it more pleasing to the eye with a touch of leather, a 12-way power-adjustable for the driver seat, and a 4-way adjustment for the passenger seat.

Plenty of Safety Features

The Toyota Harrier comes equipped with several lists of safety features including the Toyota Safety Sense system with Pre-Crash System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, and Lane Tracing Assist. Also available are seven airbags, Adaptive High-beam System, Blind Spot Monitor, and Emergency Stop Signal, as well as Traction Control, Hill-start Assist Control, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Extravagant Features

The Toyota Harrier is equipped with modern and premium interior features which include a 12.3-inch TFT wide touch-display screen with SmartDeviceLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and a driver’s head-up display. It also offers a dimmable electrochromic panoramic moonroof, a 7-inch colour TFT display for the instrument cluster, Nanoe X air purification, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear ventilation, LED elements in all the interior lights, keyless entry, and push start engine.

Outstanding Fuel Economy

The Toyota Harrier comes with a 2.0 L M20A-FKS straight-4 direct-injection petrol engine coupled with Direct Shift-CVT and has a fuel economy of 8.3 L/100 km. The 2.5 L A25A-FXS straight-4 petrol hybrid engine coupled with Electric continuously variable transmission has a fuel economy of 4.4 L/100 km. A more efficient engine with much better fuel economy.

5 Cons

Limited Off-road Ability

The Toyota Harrier is a known SUV but when it comes to rough terrain activities, this vehicle needs to be improved. The Harrier‘s off-road features are limited but come with excellent handling, driving, and maneuvering.

Insufficient Power

The new Toyota Harrier’s 2.0 L M20A-FKS straight-4 direct-injection petrol engine with 126 kW (169 hp; 171 PS) and 207 Nm (153 lb-ft) torque, lacked power compared to its previous turbocharged engine. The 2.0 L 8AR-FTS DOHC turbocharged straight-four petrol engine produced 170 kW (228 hp; 231 PS).

Low-grade Infotainment System

The Toyota Harrier is a good-looking car with plenty of modern features but when it comes to the infotainment system, it is like base model features. With an 8-inch infotainment system, while the 12.3-inch option is not compatible with some local standards in other countries.

Pricey

The Toyota Harrier offers amazing features and models that you can choose from, but still expensive, especially for the high-end models. It also is a little sad that we don’t get the turbocharged engine.

Cramped Boot Space

The new Toyota Harrier can comfortably carry five passengers but only offers 396 litres of boot space, while most of its rival SUVs offer more cargo space. The Harrier seems not adept at carrying things like any other SUV.

Verdict

The Toyota Harrier XU80 is one of the well-known mid-size crossover SUVs, boasting exceptional reliability, fuel efficiency, luxurious and comfortable interiors, and futuristic design. The Harrier definitely established its premium versatility and efficiency, making it one of the most popular midsize SUVs nowadays.
