Dogs Skin Problems - Common Types and Home Remedies to Soothe It

by Jennifer Miller Owner of this site

If you are a dog owner, then there’s one important suggestion that I would like to give you. If you ever see your pooch is continuously scratching or licking himself/herself, please don’t ignore it thinking, “It’s just a habit”. When a dog scratches or licks himself/herself, it’s definitely not a habit, it’s because he/she is suffering from some sort of skin problems or they have something on the skin. Either way investigates and mitigate.

There’s nothing to be shocked because like humans, dogs too suffer from a wide variety of skin problems. Some of the common types of skin problems that dogs suffer from are:

Allergic Dermatitis- This is one the most common Dog Skin Problems, which is caused due to various kinds of allergens present in the environment, such as dust, mite, pollens and etc.

Yeast Infection- In case you have observed that your dog only scratches his/her ear, or is just licking the paws, then probably he/she is suffering from a bacterial or yeast infection or possibly both. In fact, discolouration of the skin is also a symptom of yeast infection in dogs.

Folliculitis- This is another really common type of dog skin problems that causes bumps, sores and scabs on the skin. This skin issue can be easily identified in shorthaired dogs. And in case of dogs that have long hair, the usual symptoms are a dull coating and too much shedding of fur along with scaly skin.

These were the three common types of skin issues that most of the dogs generally suffer from. If you see that your dog has some other kinds of skin issues, then please visit a veterinary doctor as soon as possible. Because, only a vet can tell you what’s wrong with your pooch, how to cure and prevent it and etc.

Types of Home Remedies for dog skin problems (Itching, Redness, Sores)

Generally, most of the dog owners feed their pet Hypoallergenic Dog Food thinking that it would cure their dog’s itching issue and destroy the allergens. But, I would suggest, don’t feed them this kind of food, until and unless the vet has prescribed it. Instead, to provide temporary relief to your dog, you can utilize some home remedies. Here’s a list of natural home remedies for you.

Take a Look

Vitamin E - Who said that Vitamin E only works wonders on your wrinkles? It also works really well to soothe your dog’s dry and itchy skin. Just break open a Vitamin E capsule and rub it directly on your pooch’s problem areas. The oil will not only soothe the itchy parts but also will warm up her/his muscles post massage.

Chamomile or Herbal Tea Soaks - If you have chamomile or herbal tea at home, just chill it in the fridge and spray it on your dog’s itchy skin. The chilled tea will instantly destroy the allergens or yeast and bacteria, and relief your doggy from inflammation. In fact, you can also use warm chamomile tea bags to soothe your pooch’s itchy and irritated eyes.

Epsom Salt Soaks - Is your pooch having swollen and itchy paws, as well as inflamed sores? Then the ideal remedy for such skin problems is giving it a warm bath by adding Epsom salt to the water. The combination of warm water and Epsom salt will surely speed up the healing time for itchy skin and small open sores, especially if you combine it with other antibiotics for skin allergy.

Apple Cider Vinegar - Another really effective way to soothe your dog’s itchy skin is by applying a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Believe it or not, these natural remedies will surely relief your pooch from itchiness and burning sensation.
