Does porn result in more violence against women?
by Jayson Bernad Enthusiastic Blogger and WriterEstimates suggest roughly 39 percent of females and 66
percent of males end up watching porn at least once before they turn 14. Porn
has become too familiar in this era of smartphones.
Merits and demerits of pornography is a highly debatable
subject even for researchers and also Eporner
achieved parity is debatable too. Those in favor often share case
studies and examples highlighting how it proves to be excellent in improving
sex life. On the other side, people highlighting demerits focus on how
pornography affects relationships, promotes cheating and violence against
women.
Promotes sexual violence?
The young population around the world often looks at porn as
their default sex educator. The availability of a wider variety in content
influences everyone’s sex life at a very young age. It has harmful effects on
the minds of young and adults. Studies have already highlighted how pornography
is leading to more sexual violence.
Besides relationships, it also affects behaviors and sexual
expectations. Such content can reduce intimacy with time, promote body shame,
and negatively impact men’s relationship satisfaction.
Pornography often consists of acts showing aggressive men
indulging in degrading practices like choking, gagging women. Girls who are
habited to watch porn often end up following submissive practices. Studies have
pointed out that men who watch porn are more likely to display sexually
aggressive behavior and practice sexual harassment.
Overall, porn has been held responsible for discouraging the use of condoms, promoting sexual risk-taking behavior, and decreasing self-esteem in women.
Case studies from various corners of the world show that
perpetrators in crime against women cases often force and expect their victims
to behave like pornstars. The most horrible impact is the increase in sexual
exploitation of children (sex trafficking) due to child porn.
Coercing partners to do things done in porn
videos
Healthcare workers from urban community health centers
suggest women are often forced to perform painful anal sex acts by their
partners after watching porn. Couples try performing sex in positions that see
in adult films. Women are forced to consume a lot of Ibuprofen after such
sessions due to unexpected pain. They fail to understand that pornstars use
lubricants, painkillers, and other medication before the performance.
The other way around
Germany, Sweden, and Denmark happen to be among the first
few nations that legalized porn in the 1960s and 70s. During the 70s, the
University of Copenhagen’s criminology professor, Berl Kutchinsky, conducted
research to find the connection between porn and sex crime. He failed to find
any link between the two after analyzing several cases. In fact, to everyone’s
surprise, researchers found that child molestation and rape cases reduced
during this period.
Similarly, a study
published in 2009 had pointed out that the link between sexual violence and
porn use is slim. Politicians and the media often exaggerate the connection
between the two.
A study
from the Queensland University of Technology, Australia, suggests that people
who watch porn are often found to be open-minded and comfortable when
discussing sex. It can even make some people too comfortable.
