Do you know what iPhone, iPod, or iPad Screen Repair Options Are Available to You?

by Mobile Remedies Mobile Remedies

iPhones, iPods and iPads are not cheap and no matter how much we try to take care of them, accidents occur. You may drop your device or inadvertently sit or step on it. Fortunately, they are built to withstand some impact and in certain circumstances the consequences of an impact may not be serious. However, in some cases, the screen may crack or even shatter.  Cracks in your screen do not always prevent the device from functioning normally, especially if they are slight and superficial. It might only be a cosmetic problem, though you will often feel the irregularity of the glass surface under your finger. Some cracks are serious enough to cause distortion of the image on your screen or reduce the digitizer’s ability to sense your finger motions accurately. In this touch-screen age, the ability to use the screen on your device is crucial.

If your screen is damaged and needs repair, there are several options available and it is well worth your efforts to become familiar with them since you can sometimes save a lot of money. Many computer repair Hawaii businesses or cellphone/electronic repair centers in Hawaii offer low cost repair options that are fast, hassle-free and come with an excellent warranty.  It is important to make a decision based on your individual circumstances and this means that you must make some inquiries:

1. If you have an AppleCare extended warranty, you should call or go to an Apple authorized dealer and discuss the options. The AppleCare extended warranty covers up to 2 accidental damage incidents per year though you will have to pay a service fee of $79 plus tax for an iPhone, $49 plus tax for an iPad and $29 plus tax for an iPod for each incident. You should ask whether the dealer can replace your device on the spot or if you will have to wait for it to be sent out and returned. You will not have the option to recover your data though hopefully you will have done regular back-ups.

2. If your device is still under warranty and you did not purchase the AppleCare plan, it might still be worthwhile to discuss the incident with the Genius at your Apple authorized dealer since he or she will sometimes consider authorizing warranty coverage under special circumstances but this is unusual and the rules clearly state that your iPhone, iPod or iPad is not covered for physical or liquid damage under the normal 1-year Apple warranty and you will have to pay for the repair or replacement. New devices that are not subsidized by service contracts are very expensive and out-of-warranty service through Apple usually costs a minimum of $150-$250, requires sending the device to a service center on the mainland, provides no option for data recovery, and only comes with a 90-day warranty on the repair.

3. If you are out of warranty and your device is an iPhone, check with your service provider to see if you are eligible for an upgrade. You will have to sign another contract but if you are happy with your provider, this may be a good solution. If you go this route however, you will still typically have to pay $200 for the new subsidized iPhone.

4. If you have insurance, check to see if your policy covers physical damage and check on the amount of the deductible which is often between $100-$200. Many policies provide only a refurbished “equivalent” rather than a new replacement for a broken device. Inquire about how long it will take to get approval of the claim and for you to actually receive the replacement device, especially if you live in the middle of the Pacific! Be sure to follow the insurance company’s protocol for reporting the incident exactly, if you wish to avoid delays.

5. Before you come to a final decision about how to deal with your damaged device, do an Internet search for iPhone repair Hawaii, iPod repair Hawaii or iPad repair Hawaii, and call or visit a reputable cellphone/electronic repair center in Hawaii to get a quote on how much it will cost to repair your particular device, how long it will take and what warranty comes with the repair. You may be very pleasantly surprised to find that you can often get your device repaired and recover all of your data for less than your insurance deductible, sometimes while you wait or run a short errand, with a 1-year warranty on the parts replaced with no strings attached and no new contract to sign! Some centers also sell refurbished devices identical to your own that are less expensive than a new one but still come with a 1-year warranty similar to the manufacturer’s.

Remember, it costs you nothing to be well informed and in some cases, you can save hundreds of dollars!
