Impressions are taken by the patient, at home, with the kit that they are sent. The aligners are then custom created and mailed. Most people wear each set of aligners for one week, progressing to the next set.

According to Dr Naidoo, at home options can be $2-3,000 cheaper. Things can go wrong. People who don’t have strong healthy gums can lose their teeth and other things like this that a visit to an orthodontist or dentist would pick up on. He adds’ there is no right or wrong. Some people just cannot afford Invisalign and have no choice. For them, it is recommended a visit to a dentist prior to ordering at-home aligners. It is important to have a hygiene check because things can go south quickly for a patient without strong gums.’

Of course, there is more to consider than just the cost. For example, those still considering traditional braces, have to factor in the metal brackets permanently affixed to the teeth. They are very noticeable and can be uncomfortable. Invisalign is more discreet and the treatment time can be much shorter. Also, they aren’t worn while eating, whereas with braces patients have to take extra care when eating certain foods.

So, all in all there is much to consider when comparing affordable Invisalign alternatives, whether that is at-home/DIY orthodontics, or traditional braces.
