DIY Aquaponics Systems to grow Herbs and Vegetables in your Home

by PRC Agency PR

Have you ever wanted to grow your own herbs and vegetables at home? But you don't have a green thumb and not a ton of space? Simple DIY aquaponics systems for herbs at home is your answer.

I always looooved the idea of growing my favorite herbs at home - but I didn't have a lot of space. One small pot of basil is cool, but I only had enough to pick some once a week. Definitely not enough for everyone when I had friends over. (and it didn't grow a lot... it was slowly dying.)

That's where Aquaponics comes in: This simple system combines plants with fish - just like in a real ecosystem. The fish produce the nutrients that the plants need, but instead of using expensive fertilizer for your soil, you just use a live fish! The plants also have direct access to water, so you don't even have to remember to water them.

Here's a more detailed explanation from Rob: "If you connect the fish-tank water to the water of the hydroponics system... your plants get an automatic food supply of almost everything they need to grow from the fish water... and in turn... the plants filter the water for the fish. This way, your plants exist in a natural balanced relationship with the algae/fish, which makes them grow faster and healthier."

Aquaponics isn't exactly new - but there has never been a better time to start. Now, there is a whole collection of resources available, step-by-step explanations for DIY aquaponics systems for your home. Building a small space aquaponics system was never this easy, even for people who aren't tech geniuses. With the right approach, you barely need any fancy tech to set this all up! I looked at the plans, and it took my about three seconds to understand everything - and I'm a total beginner with mechanical stuff like pumps. (A pump is almost all you need, though... that, and two containers. You can use IKEA drawer units for this!)

It has been a hit whenever I had guests over - you can have both a goldfish AND fresh basil, tomatoes, or almost anything else you want - directly grown in your home!
