by sunil gavaskar clan member

Diwali is now globally known as the Festival of Light. And when it comes to light, oil/ghee lams called as ‘diya’ takes the center stage. A traditional Diya is an earthen lamp lit in the evenings during Diwali. It is usually prepared out of clay. The wick at the center of Diya is made of cotton wool with oil or ghee used as fuel. However, if you visit your local market, you will undoubtedly find electric diyas lights. They are replacing the traditional earthen diyas. Diwali diyas are lit up at the altar and kept on rangolis inside or outside the home. Traditional diyas are used in worshiping the gods. Holy rivers of India during this festival become embellished with the light emanating from diyas set afloat on the leaves.  In the Vedic scripture such as Ramayana, Lord Rama came back to His Kingdom Ayodhya after spending fourteen years in exile.  His subjects were experiencing boundless joy. All of them lit up all the streets, houses and lanes in order to receive the Lord as there was no Moonlight that night.

Exquisitely crafted oil lamps catch a number of eyes of the buyers.  The traditional earthen diya used in Diwali mirrors the spiritual sense. Also there are a number of creative artists, craftsman who engage in clay creativity making a wide range of gift items.

Just see for yourself! Shops, stores and malls fill up with brilliantly designed diyas and lamps fashioned by various designers. There are also diyas decorated with zari and mirror in lively colours. There are other charming sets of earthen lamps with the symbols of Shri , Om, Swastik  and Trishul . Beautifully designed decorative earthen are the best accessories to light up your homes/offices during the joyous occasion of Diwali.

In all the Vedic scriptures, the idea of Diwali contains the significance of good conquering the evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate the homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope.  Diwali are placed at the puja altar but it is best kept at the entrance of the door because of the heartfelt welcome feel they offer to the guests and visitors. Lighting up these pleasant diyas means to ward off the darkness, all the negative energies and inviting the Divine to come and bless your house with success, peace and prosperity.
