Differences between IELTS, PTE and TOEFL

What is IELTS?

International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a language proficiency exam. It is an international standardized test designed for non-native English speakers. As a result, your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills will be tested.

Listening:

Reading:

You will have three sections. What is the duration of the test?

You are expected to complete the test in around 2 hours and 40 minutes. In short, this is how each module is split according to time.

  • Speaking – 11-14 minutes

What is the duration of PTE?

Your PTE generally takes 3 hours to complete. However, this time includes a scheduled break of 10 minutes. In addition, your split up of components will be as below.

  • Unit 2 and 3 are the Reading and Listening sections. Reading takes 32-41 minutes, whereas, the Listening  takes 45-57 minutes

What is the score band for PTE?

Your split up for the computer-based test is below.

Reading:

You will have around 36-56 questions. As a result, you are expected to read 3 or 4 passages from academic texts and answer questions.

Listening:

Reading Comprehension:

You will have 50 questions about reading passages.

Writing:

What is the duration of the test?

You will have to complete the test within 4 hours and 10 minutes, including the mandatory break. Further, the individual time limits are as follows.

  • Writing – 50 minutes

On the other hand, your paper-based test will last around 2 hours and 20 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes. However, the individual break up is as follows.

  • Writing – 30 minutes

What is the score band for the test?

The computer-based TOEFL score is on a scale of 0-120 points. So, in each section, your maximum score can be 30. Therefore, your individual components scores are added together for the overall score. Your paper-based TOEFL score ranges between 310 and 677. It is based on three sub scores.

However, the Writing component is not a part of the overall score and is given separately on a scale of 0-6.
