Did You Know This Info About Air Disc Brakes?

by Mark Keegans Heavy Vehicle Tool Manufacturers

The use of Air Disc Brakes among heavy truck owners is rapidly growing over the past few years. Many OEM manufacturers are producing disc brakes as standard equipment. But do you know the main reason for switching into disc brakes from drum brakes? Well, the main concern is the safety of your vehicle. This is because disc brakes can help you to stop your truck or bus faster than the drum brakes and they fade less than others do.

The difference is very simple between these two brakes. While drum brakes are inexpensive, air disc brakes are more cost-efficient for your vehicle.

Air disc brakes are mainly a combination of three types of brakes.

· Service brake system: It operates when the driver uses the brake pedal while driving.

· Parking brake system: It operates when the driver uses the parking brake controller.

·  Emergency brake system: It can operate during any emergency brake failure.

The mechanism of Air Disc Brakes

These advanced brakes generally operate on air pressure, which they get from driver's control and transmit it to the service brakes. This also includes the air-over-hydraulic system of braking. Here is a brief info on its various parts that contribute to its mechanism:

  •  Air compressor with the governor: Connected to the engine with the help of a v-belt or gear, the air compressor mainly pumps the air and stores it in the air storage tanks. You can cool it with the air engine’s cooling system. Next, the governor controls the rate of pumping while storing the air into the air storage tank.

  •  Air Dryer: Most of the trucks that use Air Disc Brakes consist of air dryer nowadays. The dryer keeps the moisture out from the engine. In its absence, the water can accumulate in the engine, which causes the failure of brakes.
  •  Air storage unit: This unit helps to hold the compressed air and prevent it from condensing even if the condenser doesn’t work.
  • Drain tanks: It collects the waste oil and water. It is available with two valves- Automatic valve and split valve.

Features of Air Disc Brakes:

  • Synchronized gear adjuster ensures proper running and delivers optimal pad friction.
  • Special frictional material is ripe for optimal pad and rotor.
  • A wear indicator is also available to let quicker wear inspection even without removing the wheel.
  • A bushing of oval-shaped exists to protect your truck and calipers.
  • To conclude, Air disc brakes are no doubt a great option to choose for your truck at present times.

Summary: Air disc brakes hold widespread preference for their air compressing technique. Numerous other features make these brakes a lucrative option for vehicle owners to opt for.
