Did you know these facts about video capture hardware?

by Jayden Smith Blogger

Video capturing is the process by which the captured video from a video camera is transferred to a computer or any similar device. This is done while converting the video signals to a viewable or editable file format for further storing and modification.

The basics you needed to know about the hardware

A video capture hardware is a physical device used to convert VGA, digital or analog DVI, etc., into a readable file format that you can read with the help of your laptop or desktop. To get into a bit of technical side of the transmission, such video capture hardware has a frame grabber that can convert the video input and transfer it through Ethernet, USB or PCI.

Now let’s know something about the different forms of video grabbers.

1. Ethernet frame grabber

An Ethernet frame grabber is an external device and is generally big in size. The connection is made with the use of the regular RJ45 slot that is present in some laptops too. Moreover, following the appearance of Gigabit Ethernet into the scene, these ethernet frame grabbers have been able to capture video signals at a much higher frame rate than most other mediums. The users can install these Ethernet frame grabbers on the network at a remote location and can access them via the internet or remotely.

2. USB video grabber

These video grabbers are like small external devices that you can plug into the USB ports in a computer or laptop. They mostly support DVI and VGA inputs and work on Linux, Mac and Windows. The USB frame grabbers are very small and portable and used in most of the computers.

3. PCI Express grabbers

Unlike the USB and ethernet frame grabbers, the PCI Express grabbers are internal devices that are fixed on the PCIe slot of computers. As a slight of drawback of these grabbers, they cannot function remotely and you cannot transport them either.

Besides these three, the network-based capture devices, like VGA2Ethernet, offer a very high capture rate. They are capable of offering DVI and VGA video streams and can follow them up with audio as well.
