Designing an island for luxury kitchens

by Jacqueline Keller Ask me about Kitchen Design!

Over the last decade there has been a growing desire for ultra-large and spacious kitchens. Although these furnishings have provided us with the spaciousness that modern life demands, they do provide us with a new problem. This is predominantly true when it comes to designing a kitchen island. The installation of luxury kitchens can be a costly business, and it’s important that you get it right first time round.

Firstly you need to consider what purpose the island holds within the kitchen and in particular the functionality it holds. While it is important to have an island that is big enough for all your family to fit around, when the island becomes too big, it can quickly become more of an obstacle. For examples, this can be the case with long width islands as you do not want to find yourselves walking a long way to your kitchen appliances simply because your island is obstructing your way. Therefore it is imperative that you consider the practicalities of having an island when considering luxury kitchens.

Next it is important that you consider aesthetics when designing luxury kitchens. Too big and it will become more of eyesore, too small and it would make your kitchen look visually wrong. Moreover, if you are looking for a modern type of countertop in your kitchen then use granite and marble to give it that that classy look. However, if you would prefer to have a rustic and homely appearance then it may be wise to consider wood. This works particularly if your plans call for an extra large island, while granite, and marble are limited in size, wood islands can be ordered in pretty much any size you want. Also make sure to get one that is resistant to staining and watermarks.

If you make your island too big then it will become difficult to clean your counter top. Picture this, you have a large square island and you are trying to clean the middle, you could soon find yourself stretching your whole body to get that last bit of grub off of your countertop. Surely there must be a better way of dealing with this problem.

Finally consider using two smaller islands instead of one large one. This solution works perfectly and has been coming ever more popular amongst architects designers for luxury kitchens. With two separate small islands, one can avoid the concern of needing to walk around the island to get to various kitchens appliances. For example, have one area, which is dedicated to being a prep area; you could even add a small sink and chopping area. Then the secondary island could be used for the family to eat or to entertain guests. This practical solution to a common problem in designing luxury kitchens could work wonders for you!
