Comprehensive Guide to Dark Eye Circle Treatment

by Andy Cheng Director

Dark eye circles are the bane of many people’s existence, and they are often very tricky to treat. Some of us would know that lightening the dark eye circles is not simply a matter of sleeping longer hours.

We speak to Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics to find out the common causes and some effective non-surgical methods to lighten those dark circles and help you restore vitality to your eyes once again.

Common Causes of Dark Eye Circles

POOR BLOOD CIRCULATION If you have panda eyes, it could be because they have poor blood circulation. The condition can be made worse if you continue to maintain unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking, keeping late nights, and drinking alcohol.

In addition, the dark circles around can be more visible in some people because the skin around the eyes are extremely thin. People with genetically translucent fair skin, are also more susceptible to visible dark circles.

SUNKEN EYES OR TEAR TROUGH Aging is often the leading cause of dark eye circles. Aging causes hollows to form under the eyes. Over time, sagging cheeks and deflation of the well-padded eyes will also lead to formation of sunken eyes or tear trough - which gives the impression that you have dark eye circles.

According to Dr. Siew, many people are confused between tear through and dark eye circles. One simple test is to put some pressure on the dark circles for a couple of minutes. If they lighten before returning to the usual color, they’re likely caused by blood vessels showing through the skin. If you pull your skin or push the fat upwards and the dark eye circles seem to lighten, then it could be a tear trough.

PIGMENTATION Sometimes called periorbital hyperpigmentation, melanin may increase its production around the eyes, giving the impression that you have dark eye circles. Some factors that may cause accumulation of melanin around the eyes are skin allergies, rubbing of eyes, and genetics.

Medical Treatments for Dark Eye Circles

REFRESH DARK EYE CIRCLE LASER One of the most effective non-invasive treatments for dark eye circle, Dual Yellow Laser is a mild laser treatment specially designed to penetrate deep into the skin to break down the pigments without causing any collateral damage to the surrounding tissue.

UNDEREYE DERMAL FILLER Assuming the reason for your tired-looking eyes is because of the loose skin and the undereye hollows, a non-surgical undereye treatment using dermal fillers to introduce some volume into the area can help to reduce the appearance of dark eye circles.

By plumping the deficient areas with tiny amounts of dermal fillers, it can immediately give a smoother appearance, immediately rejuvenating the undereye areas.

RADIOFREQUENCY TREATMENT Wrinkles and fine lines under the eyes may give the appearance of dark eye circles even though it may not be the case. These unforgiving signs of aging often appear because of harsh environmental conditions or lack of proper care of the eyes.

Using AGNES, an advanced non-surgical under eye treatment, it uses a micro-insulated needle to deliver radiofrequency waves to stimulate collagen production and tighten loose skin under the eyes. In a matter of a few weeks, the skin becomes firm and blends in nicely with the surrounding skin, removing any traces of aging from your eyes.
