The J-1 visa is a way to enter the United States as “exchange visitors” for the purpose of studies, work or research work. All those who can apply for this visa include professors, research scholars, foreign students, teaching experts, short-term scholars, au pairs, medical interns, visitors and industrial & business trainees.

Here are a Few Categories of J1 Visa Holders

  • Au Pair Program - These are individuals who can come to the United States to provide child care for the family they live with.
  • Internship Program - The students or recent graduates are also eligible to apply for the J-1 visa program provided to learn about US culture and experience in their chosen occupation.
  • Travel Program – The students can come to the United States to work and travel during the winter, spring and summer seasons.
  • Camp Counselor - Individuals 18 years and older can work in US summer camps as a camp counselor or teacher.

The J1 Visa Program

  • The J1 Visa Program was first created in 1961 to provide an opportunity for foreign nationals to come to the US for job training and educational experience.
  • This visa program, provide visitors with a chance to visit the US for a short duration for continuing their education or professional training so that J-1 visitors can learn new skills on a study-related program in the US.
  • The J1 visa applicants must have to fulfill the strict eligibility criteria such as proficiency in the English language, and must have the sponsorship of a university, private organization, or government program.
  • The approval or denial of your visa application depends on the specific type of work or educational program you choose; along with who sponsors your visa.
  • If you have any dependents like spouse and non-married children under the age of 21, then they are issued with a J2 visa and are required to follow the same steps as their sponsor.

Application Process

In order to get a J-1 visa, you must take some help from an expert attorney that help you to proceed through an Exchange-Visitor Program designated by the State Department.  You must know that many private companies in the U.S. help to manage the program as umbrella organizations to give eligible applicants with sponsoring U.S. employers, companies, and institutions for the J-1 Visa holder.

In the End

Under this program, applicants must have proficiency in English and carry adequate health insurance to get the approval. In most cases, J-1visa applicants are required to go through an individual interview schedule with the US Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
